Hi guys...I got a wired problem here...Just have a new set of Falken RT-615 tires, size 205/50/15, but it seems slowed my car down, seems a bit too sticky....mine is a 97 civic with 127HP SHOC VTEC engine...does these set of tires too much for the car?

Or could it be an alignment problem? the toe is not aligned right, that's why it slows down the car?

I was using 195/60/14 tires before, I can really tell the difference...

Need some inputs here...thx guys....

 

Well I really can't see a reason why changing tires would slow down your car. But you should really really get your car aligned. You're murdering the life of those tires if you don't.

 

I don't know either....but i was using 195 tires, and now 205, does it make a big different on speed?? It seems like, on a regular driving situation, not up slope or down slope...I can usually use fifth gear, but now I sometimes have to shift down to fourth gear to keep up the speed...i'm wondering if the wheels are getting negative or positive toe....so worry now, I don't want to waste RT-615 and swap another set of tires....i'm broke now....~~~ but I will have an alignment tomorrow or soon...

Sticky tires CAN slow you down. Torque is the deciding factor here. I discovered this when I threw slicks on my Camaro. I'd run 12.5 all day long with a miserable 2.1 60' on street tires. I put slicks on it to get my 60' down and after big burnouts and REALLY hard launches I could only manage 12.9's. My friends TransAm.. same thing. Turns out my car just didn't have enough power/torque to justify the tires. It would come out of the hole like crazy but most of torque was wasted to overcome moving the weight of the car from a dead stop. Swapped tires back and ran mid/low 12's again.

 

duh, 205/50's are a little taller than your stock configuration. Technically you're gearing is longer.

Should have gone with a 195/55 on a stock car.

 

those tires slowed me down... just not in a straight line... I switched from 215's which were the shiznite those 615's are floppy wet noodles when compared to them.....
they are taller and heavier than your stock 14's were so of course they will slow you down some

 

arent the 215s almost the same as the 615s but the 615s are only better?

 

not even close I just found out the 615's aren't reinforced in the size I have. they suck sweaty ***** I every way possible while the 215's rocked

 

As previously mentioned, you lengthened your gearing by going with the 205/50/15. The 615 is also slightly wider than most 205mm tires. As a result, they're not light.

 

thx a lot for all the answers guys....so...hm..... I should throw those 14" stock back on and sell the 615s....damn...they are nice tires, but too bad my car's hp doesn't really handle it well thou.....and they are rubbing my fenders with some sharp turns....

 

Nah, just turbo your car. You won't notice it being slow anymore.

You go with your stock sohc bad-self.

 

thats wierd, I have a 95 si with si rims sitting on 205/50/15 and they actually seem better then the stock 195/55/15

 

the handling for sure is better, i can tell, but it's harder to launch, seems too sticky...so...kinda losing power, i only have 127 hp D16Y8 on mine, not like the states, B16A2 on the si

wait wait... technically the gearing is shorter. he is now at a 50 in diameter equivenalt to 20"

this theory is possibly right... hence why gas mileage efficient vechiles use skinny tires.

anyway guys...thx much on the inputs....i think i'm gonna swap the tires to 195/50/15

by the way....ZE-512 is discontinued? I see the ZE-912 now..... any good on the 912???

 

rt falken diameter: 23.07 in
rt falken circum: 72.47 in

old setup xellos had.

diam: 23.21 in
circum: 72.92

simple mathematics is showing the falken rt as being smaller in circumfrence...

so maybe the wider rolling resistance contact is overwhelming the decreased gear ratios..
