so my clutch has been slipping really bad on the sohc zc i just installed.... when i took the flywheel cover off i noticed that quite a bit of oil had been leaking from it. i got the tranny completly out to find lots of oil and sludge build up in there. the tranny is not in the greatest condition, 2nd and 5th pop out alot. i havent noticed any oil leaking from the engine and the oil level is still good, so.... is my mainshaft seal leaking??...is this common?

im just lookin for a little reassurance...i dont want to replace the tranny if that isnt the problem ya know......but im just gonna do it...hope it fixes it...
well there is only two places it can be coming from and you already said it wasnt the motor. plus you already said the tranny was in bad shape anyway. probably wouldnt be a bad idea to replace it.

Im not going to tell weather to replace the main seal or not but ill tell you how.
put 2 wood screws into the main seal, don't thread them in to far..use a screwdriver or small prybar and pry each side little by little untill it pops out, dont pry against the aluminum block though, use the STEEL crankshaft...Then to install, take the new rear main seal to homedepot or whatever place like that and find the pcv isle,,look for a piece that fits over the outside of the rear main seal,,you use that and a hammer to get it back into place on the block...
make sure you get a closed end pcv pipe,,otherwise you'll have to use a block of wood ontop to even out the blows

wow, thats sad.
do yourself the favor and replace it while you're in there. no need to tear it down again.
