Power steering on SI
Now our SI's are equipted with EPS. Does anyone know what kind of longevity this system has had or who else uses it. I did like the 3 percent gain in horsepower they say you gain. But I wounder about the pump motor maintenace and if this might become a problem for me a few years.
Honda has been making EPS systems for 17 years now beginning on the NSX in 1990

they even use EPS on ATV's now... I don't know for sure, but it would be my guess that Honda wouldn't dare put a system on their best selling car that had problems or was underengineered.. By the time technology makes it to the civic, it's usually pretty well tested (every other model gets the cool stuff first)
I wouldn't worry too much about the EPS

I really am not worried about the engineering side I was think more long term. Honda atvs with eps are piles of junk. And I doubt there are many NSX's with as many miles on them as are intended for a civic.
how can you simultaneously have confidence in Honda's engineering, but think that their product won't last? That just doesn't make sense to me... Things that are well engineered will last by definition. You could have the highest tech EPS on the planet, but if it dies after 2 years then it was obviously a problem with engineering correct?
my whole point is by the time technology "trickles down" to the civic it has been engineered to last.. Honda can afford a recall on NSX's because of the low production numbers (this is why they experimented with new things on that platform)... On the civics they can't..They aren't making enough money on them to start paying out on recalls.. do you get what I'm saying?
The only reason I brought up the ATV's is to point out Honda's experience in this area.. I don't really know much about their ATV's.. But they are putting EPS on nearly everything they make (that has steering.. you know..) If they are junk, then they are junk... but again.. ATV's aren't designed to be "high-mileage" vehicles under any circumstances...
As far as NSX's go.. yeah they don't get the miles that civics do... but you didn't ask about mileage, only longevity.. and I think that 17 years is a good example of longevity.. anyways, post on an NSX board and ask those guys what they think.. you might get a different interpretation than mine

Thank you. I am not trying to be an *** and I know that would not answer with out doing some digging as did I. I am only stating that with anything diff enviroments and test do warrent diff results. I also know that there is a back up for incase the unit fails that it will fall back on the normal steering sys. I also thank you for mentioning the NSX site, I did not even think about that.
Oh and about having confidence in eng and not in the product, All the engineering in the world does not always compensate for the human factor. IMO.

it does state something in the manual about the EPS getting hot during vigorous use causing it to be noisy and spongy. i like it better that hydro. personal preference

Yes, but what does the human factor have to do the reliability or longevity of a product. If I run over a curb with my car, and blow the sidewall in my tire, does that mean the tire was poorly engineered/manufactured? Certainly not. That would just make me an idiot for curbing my car.
You asked a question. IT GUY answered it (very well btw). By asking a question, you are pretty much surrendering, that you know nothing about the topic. So don't doubt someone when they answer you. It's very annoying when someone asks a question, and then argues about the answer.
ps-I've seen all original NSX's with upwards of 180k miles for sale before, so the EPS lasts.

S2000's since 99/00 also use EPS. I have yet to hear of a problem with it. I thoroughly tracked mine (8-10 events a year). I never had a problem with it. I know of 2 NASA H1 S2K racers and they had no issues. I would have trust in honda's engineering. Plus other manufacturers such as BMW, Mercedes, etc... have been using it for years as well.

I agree..... I have done lots and lots of autox in my s2k's and never had any problems.....and know quite a few other s2k owners that would say the same.....
