you have to define your definition of "best"

is it longevity(time wise)? weight? physical size? property?

steel. Pretty sure some company was making 4130 retainers at one point which should last longer depending on design.

It of course depends on design though also.

so is it ok to change the valve sprins and use the oem retainer...

i dont have a problem with oem retainers and skunk2 springs

but if i use the oem retainer will the retainer hit the valve seal if i'm going to use the skunk2 pro stage 1 camshaft?

Thanks for sharing. I was 40% leaning toward using the stock ITR retainer. No more...Any body have had used multiple types/brands and found the best retainers for aftermarket cam?

Although I've no training in metalurgy, I'd suspect the OEM's cracking from being reused - work hardened, making them brittle. A couple hundred miles over an OEM spring would probably get them just right, then slip aftermarket spings under them.

Or for the price of titanium, you could probably have some shop make some with some high grade steel. The design isn't anything special besides the taperd hole. As long as that is done right, ood steel usged, and run through a deburing 'tumbler', they should last a long time.
