is it bad to be in vtec while freeway driving?
hi i went on a road trip this weekend and i was averaging 100mph on the freeway which puts me in Vtec, does anyone know if thats bad? i'm sure theres no problem with the cam changeover but does it burn a lot of oil having the oil squirters on at a constant for so long? thanks
I honestly think that driving 100mph in a 4 cyl. for prolonged periods of time is where your real problem will come into play. not being in vtec

VTEC doesn't come on when you're just cruising along, i think.

vtec engagement depends on (among other things) oil pressure, engine temperature, and throttle position . if you are making a 0-100mph dash, it will most definatebly be engaged.. however, cruising at 100mph under say 25-30% throttle, vtec won't engage

I'm pretty sure that the VTEC engagement point varies depending on throttle angle, when controlled by the stock ECM. The only way to be sure would be to wire up some kind of VTEC indicator light, or have something that would tell you when it crosses over (like VTEC controller or V-AFC, etc.). Like if you're at WOT it engages somewhere below 5000 rpm on B18C1 engines. However if you're only at partial throttle in 5th, it is probably higher. I've seen how-to's before about how to wire up a VTEC indicator light, it should be pretty simple with a repair manual.

couple tings. first of all, it engages like 200rpm later at 20% throttle, its not much of a difference. second of all, its no biggie if you are in vtec with gsr cams.... they're so mild that its really not a big deal. Now with jun3s, you'd probably have to do a valve adjustment if you ran them in vtec in 5th for a hundred miles...

true, yes it doesnt engage till 4900 when youre not fully pressing the gas, but i'm definate it was engaged for i can clearly hear it, i'm runnig ITR cams but youre sure that there are no other problems that can occur when vtec is engaged for long periods of time? thanks
you should not expirence any problems other the local enforcement agency....it will not ruin your motor or valve train but it will put in extra stress, as with any type of driving the motor is under stress and will wear out...
but to prevent any wear change oil, more often, keep the motor cool (ie. oil cooler), check sparkplugs and basic tuning goes a long way
good cold air intake will also benefit the motor, at sustained high speed, not only for HPs but for keeping it cool
btw. if it was a problem to keep the car in VTEC for long time don't think Honda would of sold the ITR with 4.785FD sets in Germany, where its given that high RPM and high speed will be an issue....
btw. vtec engagment point changes with TPS it can be from 4.4-5.0k rpm

You better hope your state doesn't have laser guns, or your fucked.
Oh wait you're fucked either way 100 mph- are you nuts? not even the best radar detector will protect you from pigs camping and seeing you on your own then using instant on.

cruisin at a 100 is rough on your motor...plus you must of got really shitty gas mileage...i know on my gsr..if i go past 80...i get 28-32 mpg, but if i go 70-75, then i'm averaging 35-40! Now going 100, damn....the life of your motor is just straining now if you keep that up. Plus cruisin at a 100 is hazardous to other people on the road, especially old people who;s reflexes arent quick enough like ours.... just keep it safe man..
i'm not gonna argue, youre right. if i get caught i'm fucked, and i have been many times before. but its a chance I take, In my first few years of driving i got caught many times but i've become more careful and am not wreckless at all. but yes it is a chance i take
whether VTEC is engaged depends on a lot of things.. to name a few.. engine/coolant is at operating temp, oil pressure/temp, car is in gear, throttle position/engine load/rpm, also that your CE lights aren't on..
anyway I went to college in Nor Cal and use to drive to So Cal (also my home) to see my ex gf on weekends a lot and I would be going 100+ MPH for most of the trip (400+ miles from Nor cal to So Cal).. and my car hasn't had any problems..its a 95... i changed my oil religiously and did all the other maintenance on schedule.. if you did a teardown maybe my motor would be a bit more worn than say someone that babied their car.. but so far I havent had any problems w/ my motor...

I have a vtec light on my integra, theres a 15 mile stretch of road on my way to work every day, and when cruising in 5th gear vtec does not engage till approx 5200-5400rpm on my car (4400rpm @ WOT) which is about 105mph so unless you had your foot down the cams would have been spinning only the primary lobes (vtec off)
