Default What is a hydro tranny?

I have done the search, I am not sure what a hydro tranny is, can anyone help? Have seen some for sale, but not sure what difference that makes, are they trannies from a GSR? Besides gearing, aren't they the same as the LS and GS? Are they any stronger? I know the Tpye R's have a LSD and geared different. So what are the advanges for the hydro tranny? are they stronger?

Correct me if im wrong, but i believe a hydro tranny uses a hydraulic clutch rather than a cable.

I think that is right, and i think they are better than the cable.

Some will say they are better, some will say they are the same. I've driven both, and don't notice too much difference.
hydrosmak is correct, the hydro uses hydraulics to actuate the clutch and cable trannies use a cable as the linkage.
GSR trannies can be either cable or hydraulic. Anything pre '94 is cable, anything '94 and beyond are hydraulic.
Gearing wise GSR's are shorter geared than LS's. I believe with the cable version the GSRs have YS1 trannies which are the short geared version, while I believe(might be wrong)some of the LS/GS models got long geared YS1's.
Hope that helps.
Also, for purchasing one, if you have hydro get hydro.
If you have cable, get cable unless you absolutely must have hydro then you can do a conversion.

so since I have a 99GS, I have a hydro tranny, but am better off if I get the GSR tranny because it's geared lowered? I am doing a GS turbo setup, and always thought the Integra gears were too short but then again, I've never ran the 1/4 either...

yeah, 99 you have a hydro. Depending upon what you want to do with it, a GSR tranny has shorter gears then the LS/GS tranny that you have. I think the GSR tranny is overall a great tranny for just about anything. It will benefit you in 1/4 mile racing from the shorter gears.

LS gears are too long. i think a gsr tranny is great for boost. but many people will argue and tell you about how the b16 is the best because short gears make you accelerate faster with or without a turbo. type R trannies are too expensive.

one of the downfalls of a cable tranny, especially that they're generally over 13 years old, is that the cable itself tends to rust, fray, and eventually just break.

if you read what they say about the LS tranny: THIS IS A GREAT TRANNY FOR THOSE WHO WILL BE PUTTING A TURBO KIT IN THEIR B SERIES MOTOR. THE LONGER GEAR RATIOS OF THE LS LETS YOU SPOOL UP YOUR TURBO WAY BETTER THAN ANY OTHER.

so what do you guys think about the ls/gs tranny being better for the turbos?

If your making 500whp+ and can accelerate through all the gears quickly than a LS tranny might be the best way. Your main goal is to keep it in the higher end (of the rpms) as much as possible because thats where it produces the most power, with that being said, the shorter the gears the longer you are in your "power ban". If your looking at lower numbers than that a GSR or B16 tranny is going to give you the best results because they will keep you higher in your power ban.

that guys an idiot. that theory of longer gears making your car accelerate faster is false. a shorter tranny will keep you in your powerband. just because youre in gear longer does not mean its better. if your making big numbers though you might want a longer geared tranny but thats if your up in the 500-600whp+ club. even most of those setups use at least a gsr tranny.

if ur going LS turbo, keep the stock LS tranny because the gears are longer, u want more spooling out of every gear that u can get.

wrong. you dont get any more "spool" out of an LS tranny you simply just stay in gear longer. a shorter geared tranny WILL make you accelerate faster.

*note* if you have traction

Well it really would depend on what you were doing i think. If you were drag racing, then the shorter gears would make you accelerate faster. But you will also run out of gears quicker. If you want top speed you will want the longer gears.

everyone seems to look for other peoples mistakes rather than other answers to the problem that may be helpful to the OP

i get what youre saying BUT even with a b16 tranny and an 8k+ redline you can do over 130. fast enough for me.

like it was originally stated if you have a FAT powerband than you would want an ls tranny because you are always making power

personally i would choose a hydro gsr because its longer thatn b16 and shorter than ls and just has good gearing for boost
