stupid idle, jumping again argg, timing question
Yesterday my car was idleing fine, but its been running crappy, misfiring, sluggish below 2k rpms and all.
i knew my ignition timing was off so i borrowed a light and went to set it.
i jumped the service connector, idle at 700 rpms or so, went to set timing to 16 btdc.
i advanced my dizzy all the way and was still barely at the first line (the one closer to the tdc mark either 14 or 18 btdc, cant rember)
anyways, my first thought was timing belt has jumped a tooth.
so i checked my timing and low and behold its off.
with the cam at TDC the crank mark is off to the left a bit. however it doesnt appear to be a whole tooth off, it seems too small to be a whole tooth.
so i left my timing all the way advanced and went on my way (i was at work and needed to stop and work again)
on the drive home my idle started fluctuating. i know this has to be timing related cause thats the only thing i changed.
the head has been milled .010 and has a 2 layer y8 headgasket.
could this cause the cam timing to be off enough to cause this trouble? mabey that and jumped a tooth on timing belt and thats why it doesnt appear to be off a whole tooth?
is an adjustable cam gear the only way to remedy the issue?
Do you think its ok to continue to run the car with the timing like it is until i can fix it?
thanks for looking, respond if you can, bump if you cant

I'd look at that and consider it in your case. I'd also check your IACV in the back of your intake manifold.

that is not the issue, i have already replaced the whole intake manifold, gaskets, iacv, map, tps
it was fixed, nothing changed until i screwed around with the ignition timing and found that my cam timing is a little off as well.
read my post, it explains my questions

ok yesterday i pulled the timing covers and crank pulley to check the out the cam timing.
i put the crank at TDC and looked at the cam and it is fine, its off a hair, but i think thats because of the head being milled.
anyways.
since my cam timing is correct, why cant i set my ignition timing correctly? i have it advanced all the way and still only get to about 12° BTDC
i have another dizzy from a d16z6, should i try that?

well since no one answered this im going to bump it up with what fixed it for searching purposes.
basically i couldnt set my timing correctly but my cam timing was correct.
i dunno if the distributor on my car was the wrong one or if it was bad, but i swapped it out for another distributor and i was able to set my ignition timing correctly.
so the answer was....
