Default Honda's with Targa tops? T-Tops?

Just wondering if anyone has ever done anything that crazy, convert their honda WITH pillar windows, to a t-top, or targa top? A friend of mine works at a bodyshop and he's making a show-car out of his 93 accord coupe (cb7), and thats one thing he wants to do, but i said that it would be next to impossible, the roof and all the pillars will have to be re-enforced some how, and the doors redesigned so they dont have pillars on the top or the side. Here are some pix of cars that come with these, and a pic of a random cb7:

Just be very aware that targas and convertables usually weigh more because of the extra strength that has to go into the A pillar. When you have a full enclosed roof, the structure can spread the weight out and thus it doesn't need to be substantial. However with the A pillar having to support most of the weight of the car plus the angle that A pillars usually exist in it makes the load much more substantial. If you just chopped the middle out of a regular car, I would very much venture to say that the A pillar would easily collapse in a roll over.

Also each of the (sports) cars that you showed most likely have an integrated roll bar built into the roof behnd the drivers seat to help support the weight of the car. Again, the Accord roof kind of hangs over from the C pillar. You would need to increase the strength of the A & B pillars should you do this and plan on making it road worthy.

Legal disclaimers aside, I think that body style is to boxy for a T top. Notice all those other cars have more sweeping lines. I think a 94-97 would look more appropriate.

what if he gets a full roll cage and also a t-top like the mr2, the bar in the middle, so there is some extra support, not a full targa top? the windshield wont like crack when turning hard? or the rest of the body wont flex?

if its strictly a show car, it still seems like it would be pretty damn hard to do.

about the windsheid comment...my Del sol windsheild broke because of body flex! they also had no stiffining stuff like strut bars.

We have a '79 Volare Road Runner with factory t-tops that were actually done aftermarket for Chrysler. When you put the car on jackstands the door gaps change.

You'll need a lot of stiffening because on a Honda there is a good amount of strength in the pillars along the side of the roof skin.

your correct targa's do weigh more and they also arent great because of all the body roll, no matter how much reinforcement you add, the body will twist a whole lot more then with a closed top car...

yea but the frame rails need to be beefed up. we are building a convertable out of a sedan and we spent a week just strengthening the frame rails and trans tunnel. the car will fold in half if you cut the roof and pillars off

i actually done it to a 95 civic eg6 it turned out pretty good all i did on it was switch oput the del sol windsheild and a pillars and welded in the rear section of the roof. but the tricky part of it was the doors it was a pain in the A$$ ill never do it again ill tell u that much. and as far as drive ability goes with it 0 chance the car actually sagged while in the process of doing it. only way to do a civic (which im going to assume accords are about the same) is to make a sub frame first 2" square tubing box tied into the unibody under the car. just a thought if your friend is gonna actually try it!!! and if so good luck he's gonna need it. pm me if u wanna see pics of my eg6 when it was in the process.

Just get yourself a DelSol if you really like a Targa top.

Did the kid offer you something along the lines of "Dude, if you pay me 1000 dollars, I'll take it off your hands"? You officially sentenced one to death...lets leave it at that and just view this as "what not to do to a Civic".

it would be fairly simple to do but as #2 post said short of a serious cage it would be very flimsy and I could see breaking the windshield after a hard corner happening.
