Nothing came of the thread I quoted, but I have the exact same problem. I replaced my transmission to get rid of the grinding noise (it sounds like an axle fell out of a tranny and the splines are grinding). The grinding noise is gear dependent, it goes faster in higher gears.

I replaced the tranny, so that is not the issue. I checked the axles and half shaft and didn't see anything wrong. After the tranny, you have axles/halfshaft/hub assy.

What could be creating this awful spline/grinding noise?

The universal joint on the drivers axle is muck. Gator stage 2 FTL. Hopefully there is some form of warrenty on this thing.

The axle/halfshaft assy. was spinning but not the hub/splined side of the universal joint.

I was about to mention this...Had it happen to me while driving on the highway at about 100 mph. Axle inboard shaft seperated from the axle shaft itself and got stuck.
