Exedy clutch issues

i installed an exedy full face organic cluch, pressure plate and flywheel all at the same time around 3th miles ago. i dropped the tranny to install my mfactory stuff, and was surprised to see scorch marks on the flywheel and pressure plate. looking at the clutch disc, it looks like the middle of the material wasn't engaging. any comments on why this happened? car isn't drag raced or subjected to high rpm launches




Could have been a few things ....
1) What was your bed-in procedure? Looks as if the clutch disk wasn't given time to flatten out against the pressure plate before it was driven hard.
2) What does your flywheel look like? Any scoring? Improper installation can cause stuff like this.
3) Any slippage or symptoms that would notify you of something like this?
Under normal conditions, this shouldn't happen. The Exedy Organic kit is a GREAT clutch kit (I don't give a flying **** what other people say), but all in all, it is still a stock clutch ... it's no where near a Race clutch ... this is why some people hate them ... they install this clutch under the premise that it IS a race clutch and treat it accordingly. Than wonder why it's slipping in a few thousand miles.

i drove the car easy for 500 miles to break the clutch in. the exedy flywheel also had the same scorch marks, but no scoring. the pressure plate wasn't scored either, it still has the original machining marks. i'm thinking the pressure plate wasn't exerting pressure on the disc evenly, well at least that's my theory. i noticed a slight lag in acceleration when i step on the gas hard, now i know the reason why

What a coincidence, I just changed mine like 1k kms ago. I got mine from HRC in Banawe. No problem with mine whatsoever. Car actually felt better when accelarating. So was it just the lag that you noticed? Any judder or vibration?
hmmmm yea looks like improper break in but you say you drove it 500 miles
............. but on the other end my organic has treated me great for 50k miles so far and still pops my dash when i shift hard....... has never slipped one tiny bit........ and i only drove mine easy for about 40mi
guess im just lucky ive had a couple friends with them that the springs have popped out......... seems they either last a long time or the springs pop out

to reiterate, i never slipped the clutch for high rpm launches, just normal street driving. and i'm not a clutch driver either. before this happened i was a believer in the exedy brand, that's why i bought it in the first place. my clutch disc looks different because i'm in asia, that's what we get here

with regards to the scorch marks on the flywheel, should i just sand it down? or do i need to reface it? i don't feel any scratches or gouges on the flywheel surface.

Resurface. You will want to take it to a machine shop before using it again.

Mileage means nothing for break-in procedure. It has to be city type driving but not stop and go where you have to ride it. Also varying the shift RPM's with no hard launches but no casual slow riding. Progressively go harder/higher RPM's over the mileage. I consider it an art form but my Exedy Stage 2 can be driven to feel like a CVT transmission with proper shift points and revs. Not to place blame on ya but I'd say it didn't have enough shift time to seat properly.
you must have a flat flywheel either new or machined. you must use brake cleaner and wipe the face of the flywheel and the clutch disc and the pressure plate before install. you must torque the pressure plate in sequence.
i have seen this before and that was from a dirty install. any oil on the face of the flywheel greatly reduces torque holding. new flywheels all come with an oily face. in fact lacquer thinner would be better still.
i would guess yours was either dirty, flywheel wasn't true or it was torqued improperly.
a leaking main seal MIGHT contribute as oil would get flung around in there. should be easy to tell if that is the case

Why worry? Use the clutch till it's dead and then replace it. Stage 1s are like...$250? I'm sure it'll be fine for a couple years. It'll even itself out. It doesn't look that bad. It takes like 3 hours to replace when it finally goes bad. I bet you spent more time than that worrying.
