Default Help! Blue Smoke

I need help. I have a d16a6 and its putting out blue smoke. I just replaced the headgasket a couple months ago. Do you think it could be another blown headgakset?
-Thanks, Kyle

Does the smoke smell sweet? Are you burning either coolant or oil?

yup replace your rings..or bettr yet if you were thinking of an engine swap nows the time. This happened to me last month and since I had no money for a dohc engine I bouhgt the motor for$200(rebuilt) and used my old tranny and swapped it in. Its pretty pricey if you want to re ring your pistons(cuz its quite alot of wrk to do).

Blue should be burning oil. Coolant is white.

Check spark plugs for oil. Could be bad gaskets in the valve cover. Get a compression test too. Start checking the easier fixes first.

I am thinking of an engine swap, but im 16 and work at a grocery store. My buddy just got in a front end collison with his ef sedan. He has a b16a in it and said he would sell it to me for 1500$ for the entire car. I was thinking strongly about it.

About the rings, my motor is bored 30 over with oversized zc pistions. Do you know how much im looking at to re ring my pistons?

I just got a new valve cover and new gaskets for it as well.

$1500 for the entire car...coming with a well fuctioning B16 swap....with all hte little extras? I'd take it. Do a heavy duty inspection on it all though. It was front end damage. Something is probably hiding.

Time for a compression test then. Also check out your PCV valve. If everything still looks good it's either your valve stem seals or the rocker arm o-rings.

I just checked my spark plugs and had my haynes manual by my side and cylinders 1 & 4 matched haynes pictures for "TOO HOT" and cylinders 2 & 3 matched their "PREIGNITION" pictures. Also, Cylinders 2 & 3 had oil on the spark plug threads.

I was there when he got in a wreck, and the only thing wrong with the front end is the bumper fell off and the hood is screwed up. Ive already checked out the engine bay, and the radiator has been pushed up to the header, with about an 1/8 inch inbetween. nohting happend to the motor though.

If I did get the sedan, I would just swap motors. I love my hatch, and wouldnt trader her for the world.

Kyle, this is your brother speaking. Before any assumptions are to be made, you must first do a cylinder leakage test. Compression test is a waste. If your spark plugs are what you say they are, you must step to a colder spark plug, go outside to the shop now, and pull the plugs and report back with the spark plug #. Next, as previously mentioned in this thread, check your pcv valve, pull it out, shake it, and if it rattles it is good, if not, replace. Make sure you are checking for oil leaks... good!. Blue smoke is some sort of oil being burned. You could have piston rings which is highly unlikely for a motor with less than 20k on it. Honda valve seals are also notorious for leaking, your valve guides could be worn, there is more to blue smoke than piston rings! Cylinder leakdown test will tell you what the culprit is. Call me when you see this post!

I know someone will try and say that compression test is god, but it's not. On a modified engine especially one with different pistons, you will find that your readings will not match oem, due to different compression ratios, weather or not you have all the spark plugs out when doing the test of just the one on the cylinder you are testing, how many revolutions you do your test for. Also, if all cylinders are leaking somewhat, you are comparing your readings with bad cylinders to start with. All you can show acuratley is how much a cylinder is leaking compared to the others.

I know the info in your helms manual is in black and white, check this out. If you are burning oil like you say you are, your plugs will more than likely be oil fouled. I'll be home in two weeks, don't sweat this too much.
