Is it normal to see the flywheel in a Type R?

I have a 2000 and I can see my flywheel (see the pics).
The reason why I posting this is that I was doing an oil change on my buddy's 98 Type R and I did not see his flywheel, so I'm like what a hell??......

Am I missing anything?

That's fine...It's just missing a cover.

Some people leave them off due to exhuast clearance issues.

mine came with a bracket/cover...not sure if all year ITRs have it or not. I heard it helps keep the trans from flexing away from the block though...

That would explain it

The previous owner had a SMSP header with T1R exhaust.

Thanks for your help

well technically its missing a transmission BRACE which is supposed to stiffen the engine/trans assembly...

you dont NEED this, but a cover would definitely be nice to have.

the LS/GSR have a cover the ITR has a big aluminum brace (which wont fit with the bigger headers SMSP for example)

Thanks for the info.

Anyone has a picture of how the transmission brace looks like?

I'm trying to find it on http://www.sonsacuraparts.com but so far no luck

There should also be a cover on the shift linkage bushing.

My GSR has two braces, front and rear, from the transmission to the engine. Just to clear that up.

right...number 9 and 11 in the pic. those will not fit with the SMSP header either

The trans brace is missing. On my track car it is also removed, but it's that way because of the SMS header I put in. Best ground clearence will require removing that brace. Loads of guys have done this and have no issues.

Do you guys know if the Toda header requires you to remove that cover?

Thanks for the pics Dave

I will eventually go with the SMSP header but for now I'm keeping the stock one (got to payoff school loans first haha).
I actually found a transmission brace locally for $35
