blown rad
My crx blew its radiator today!
yay! not just the cap the whole top of the raditator blew the f*** off. any ideas? my overflow was filled to the max. also if I had known it was over heating I would have turned it off but my gauge cluster is f**'D and I have been trying to find one locally that I know works. anyways what would make my radiator explode into peices? and do you think my head gasket is f'd?

a lack of antifreeze could be your problem. if you were just running water or something, and it started overheating, it could probably build up enough pressure to blow it up like that.. thats the only idea i have, aside from a headgasket leak, which i would think would be extremely unlikely to cause something like that. usually you see bubbles in the overflow, and/or white smoke.. and if you take off your oil cap, it looks like you are running vanilla milkshake for oil.
I've had a blown HG cause a radiator to blow out. Otherwise you may not have a pressure-relief type radiator cap on there, allowing too much pressure to build up internally until it popped.
Sometimes, it's just a part's time to go though.

You are correct. It shouldn't go above the "MAX" line.

ya I know it was filled up to the minimum line the last time I checked it which was saturday before the H-T meet in the NW, but this is really weird I'm checking to see what color my exhaust smoke is in the morning. if its the normal exhaust color then hopefully my head gaskets fine right? but if its alot of white smoke then my gaskets gone. O and this is a nice excuse to buy a koyo, right?

yea. it is. or a brand new oem. eother way, nice new radiator is always good.
i rmeember on my old stock radiator i was tring to just squeeze the hose off the mount on the radiator, i pulled off the house mount with a top chunk opf the radiator lol.
looking inside the radiator, i see it was more or less rotted and had crytaline build up of gunk. the plastic wasweathered and gave signs of its impending doom.
so basically in my opinion: in time, the plastic of a stock radiator will rot and weaken and will give away once a problem finally comes and busts it.

I have an 88 crx with a retarded looking hood no corner lights and rockin the steelies(needs some love but I need some cash). I went there and parked next to the staples cause I got there 30 mins late. I also got a new aem style koyo for 114 not bad from performance radiator in everett. but kinda off topic but does anyone have a gage cluster for a crx, kinda want a temp gage asap and not a crappy aftermaket one that you dont know what temp your car is suppose to be at.
