Speedomenter doesn't work most of the time.. need help!! 1995 accord 4cyl auto
this is 1995 accord 4 cylinder auto.. i replaced vss on top of transmission twice!! its not acting irregularly, it does not jump all over the place or other weird inconsistent issues. it works 1 out of 10-20 startups and from very start it either works or it does not. when it does work, it keeps rolling all the way no matter how long is the drive.
so, what else could i check? as far as i know it just stopped working for no reason.

replace the actual cluster piece, i just posted about this yesterday
Remove the cluster (Accord FAQ) and pull off the back circuitry of the speedo and try that first. Just snag any 94-97 Accord cluster and rip off the circuitry from that (it pulls right off) VSS is only the problem if there's a CEL

oh thanks, i will try that.. i have to mention one more thing. my cruise control doens't work regardless if speedometer is working or not.. i don't care all so much for it not working, but wonder if it has anything to do with it
Hmm,
usually cruise not working suggests the VSS is bad
but it will also throw a CEL - maybe try to pull a code and see if the light is gunked up on the cluster?
But two bad VSS's (Assuming they weren't used/crap) is kinda off
I replaced my VSS because of a similar speedo problem and it didn't fix anything. Replacing the back of the actual speedo fixed it

The plug on that attaches to the Vss , There are 3 lil prongs in the plug. Most times prob with the speedo is caused by corrosion on the the terminals. If you have the green colored corrosion then get some contact cleaner and a small wire brush and clean the prongs.
Cruise control has a fuse , and runs on a vaccum pull. Check the fuse and the vaccum lines. When you push in the button for cruise does the light come on . And just wont set speed ? OR nothing at all ?
if your plug is pretty clean , I would just replace the cluster . From what I have seen , when the cluster goes, it doesnt start and stop like your situation is. But its possible .

has no one searched about the defective speedometer gauge that 94-97 accords seem to have, i've come across at least 20 now. i've had 3 defective ones (defective over time....luckily the junkyard stocks them in their 94-97 accords
imagine that.
Want a quick fix, bang on your cluster, or hit the odometer reset button a lot, and it will startup. the needle will magically start moving, it's a phenomenon in itself.
The usual problem lies in the little needle motor at the back of the speedometer gauge in the cluster, if you take it out and shake it. you'll hear a rattle, because it is loose, and now has intermittent contacts. i haven't tried to make one better, i just keep going to the junkyard, and if it starts failing, i just bang on the cluster or odometer reset, and presto. goodluck though. (Common problem, could be different, but lemme know)

took cluster apart, replaced the pc board in the back of speedemeter gauge, everything started to work right away. i didn't want to replace the whole piece so i can keep original milage counter.
(btw, theres no need to remove dashboard or outer center console piece, you will need to remove the inner piece that includes clock/lighter then be able to reach the 2 srews securing cluster/climate cover)
now, cruise control still does not work, both lights come, on dash and inside cluster but never locks on.. i checked fuse and its good
