to answer your question, i have a honda and im biased, most magazines rate the r6 good around the track, But as far as real world riding, the powerband isnt that useful.
Outta all the 600cc's this year the 600rr probably has the best powerband for real world riding.
Dont count the R6 out though it post the same 1/4 mile times as the 600rr.
Like said time and time again all bikes are basicly the same as it comes to performance, just go for whatever you like as far as looks and feel.
I like the new r6 looks good, i love the tail end of them!

i have an 06 which is basically the same. 'twas my first bike so i can't really compare it to anything, but yeah, i love it. brakes work really good, trans is smooth, turn in is really nice, you just point it and it goes. here's some pics since you asked for them.
edit: respect the bike, and most importantly respect yourself and you should be good. ride safe and smart!

If its your first bike it will be enough speed and cornering. Sometimes a 600cc is too much for a rider just starting out the rider will make all the difference. Take time on it and be safe you will be holding the curbs life sux die after a while.
Its a tough choice, some people don't want to be made fun of riding something smaller. I can tell you this much, if I started on a 600RR, I wouldn't have the skill I have now on the new one. I know a lot of people who start out with a 600 and still havent really progressed, they can just ride the basics. Regardless, I own an 07 RR and I really love it, took all the bikes out on a test ride and this one caught my attention, great power band and very flickable. To each his own though, ride/play safe dude!

My '07 R1 is the first bike I have owned. I've ridden dirt bikes and 4-wheelers before, but never a street bike. I have ridden with R6's, GSX-R's (of all types), Kawasakis, etc. As far as performance goes, stock for stock, you will not tell a difference between two 1000 cc bikes as far as acceleration goes. Obviously depending on the clutch setup and what-not, there may be a different feel, but anyone who knows what they are doing will run pretty damn close in any 1000 cc bike (or similar).
As far as powerband goes Yamaha (R6 and R1) have to my knowledge the most narrow powerband of any bike of their size. But the gearing makes up for it. I can take first on my R1 to 95 mph. R6's are somewhere around 80 (I believe).
And cornering, for a first rider, I wouldn't even really worry about that. I mean if you really want to take your brand new (or even used) bike out and push its cornering limits without ever riding before, be my guest. I will tell you that I was scared sh*tl3ss the first time I drove my bike. Whether it was cornering, stopping, accelerating, I was minding my P's and Q's The fastest vehicle I had owned to that point was my Civic (14's, yeah I know, blazing), but being on a street bike is just totally different.
Honestly, the reason I chose my bike was for looks. I like the looks of most street bikes, but I loved the look of the R1. If was a hard core rider, I may take more into consideration, but I like the way mine looks, and it's got power for me to spare. I'm glad I didn't buy a 600, but it is all in what you want and think you can be safe with.

if its your first bike and youre gonna get a new 600cc, just get whatever one you think looks the best. they are all going to have too much power for you and handle like the gods.
yeah pretty much, r6, cbr600rr, zx6r, gsx-r
they all have power that someone who's never riden before wouldn't be able to notice the difference between them all...
they will all make you **** yourself pretty evenly.
since it seems you have already made up your mind, just respect it. and take it slow. gear up.
good luck.
