Default sedan engine ticking

my sedans in trouble. it has a little knock when im driving it. it doesnt do it when the car is sitting still, but when im driving tho. if i was just driving and maintaining speed no sound, but when i go to speed up/accelerate after changing gears i hear a slight tap between 1500-3500 rpm. and is only when you get really into the gas like 2/3 throttle. the sound kinda sounds like something in a sode can getting shaken. i know its hard to diagnose a problem through the internet but any help is appreciated. thanks

"something in a pop can rattling and shaking" = detonation under load, check your timing

yes that may be so, is it the exact same replacement distributor, either way bring the engine to operation temperature and check timing

i had went to the local auto parts store to get the new distributor, switched over my old cap and rotor, since the bearings went out in the old one and put it back on.

just eye match it, check the wiring on the dizzy and match it up to your old one? is it hte same? also are you dpfi or mpfi, if your dpfi you WONT have a blue/with green stripe and blue/with yellow stripe wire as thats the dizzy sensor wires for mpfi. You should have the one plug with black/yellow wire and solid blue.
Then the main plug should have 2 white wires, a white and blue, orange, orange/blue.

OH A6, Ok so you have mpfi. So that means that you have the blue, yellow and blue, green sensor wires. Unless somehow your timing belt skipped a tooth or something and your timing is severely off.

it does sound like detonation..check the timing, maybe you installed the distributor wrong and it's fully advanced.

Anytime you replace the distributer, you have to retime the motor with a timing light. If you don't have one the find a buddy that does, or take it to a shop.

not really unless you have alot of pressure a.k.a. boost or high compression..you can detonate all you want with that motor's compression ratio and it won't really have any affect besides the horrible noise.

No ****,,,but he asked if it would damage the motor if he drove it like that...And it won't,not with the compression ratio of this motor....if you have turbo or high compression n/a it's posibble to blow the motor the 1st time it detonates,,but that's not the case here

i get what your saying now its just that when you read that it sounds like your telling him that he can drive around all day detonating and not worry about it
