Default front passenger wheel sound

loud intermittent rubbing screeching (and scraping )metal on metal sounds suddenly from front passenger wheel area. No obvious external interference. Car has under 5,000 miles. Never heard anything like this before on any vehicle and I am familiar with autos.

If I did not know better sounds like broken( yes broken) rotor, terribly bad bearings and other phenom going wrong. Very odd sudden incident.

Loud sounds dissipate but appears there is some rubbing sound remaining. Loudest metal on metal sounds at 2-5 mph dissipates at 5+ mph but returned at approx 45 mph 5 minutes later then dissipates to perhaps rubbing only(hard to hear) Drove only 6 miles after incident.

I did go over parking lot speed bump right prior to incident but only @ perhaps 2- 3mph or less. I had been fully aware of speed bump on approach. Drove over very carefully and did not hear bottoming or any noise.

My dad has an '06 EX coupe and had the exact same issue. Somehow, a rock had gotten stuck in between the caliper and the rotor on one of the wheels (may have even been the same wheel, not sure). He drove for a few miles after the noise started before the wheel froze up. He ended up having the dealership tow it in where they replaced the rotor, caliper, and pads under warranty.

It sounds to me like you have something stuck in there that is moving around (the movement is probably why the scraping sound comes and goes). Look for grooves and/or scrapes on the rotor to confirm. I would recommend you get your car to the dealership as soon as you can, and have it towed if possible.

Hope this helps. Let me know what you find out.

Could be a blown ball joint, but thats rare since the car is new.

thanks We think it was/is stone at rotor or between shroud. Looking with local mechanic now. No warranty on this so not worth towing 1 hr away to nearest dealer. I knew this could be it but sound was so strange and it had never happened to me through numerous vehicles over the decades. It also sounded like metal on metal. Hopefully no damage. No noise this am for 1 mile drive to mechanic but load at 2 miles from home last night . We'll see.......

No warranty @ 5000? That blows.

Also check the motor mount on the passenger side. Make sure everything is torqued down correctly for it. I could see a loose/broken mount making a noise like that.

I was just able to ask my dad for more information on this issue and I have to correct some of my previous statement. He said that he had his car towed to avoid further damage to the rotor, the wheel did not freeze. He also said that nothing had to be replaced, and there was no warranty issue. He said that the dealership guys were just nice enough to take care of it for him at no cost. They simply took the wheel off and popped the rock out with a screwdriver (no damage to the rotor or anything else). Sorry about the incorrect information earlier.

factory warranty is 36k miles or 36 months... you haven't reached either.. so, what's up with your warranty?

sounds like it could be a backing plate bent into the rotor (possibly due to driving over the speed bump), considering the low mileage.

It was a rock between rotor and shroud!!!!!!!

Norm

Now to get under car (@ 4,500)and see if what I thought was fluid(oily) was real at 3000 miles. I heard Civics have trouble with power steering fluid leaks at box or hoses.
Dealer said previous models but not heard of 07's having it.

An issue like this wouldnt be covered under warranty anyway.
