d-series tranny VSS speedo gear help
97 cx 23820-P00-000
97 dx 23820-P01-000
94 cx 23820-P01-000
I'm helping a freind build a budget gas-saver. He has a 94 CX shell and motor, and a 97 d-series tranny, not sure which motor it came from.
Right now we need to figure out which VSS and speedo-gear to get.
Based on part numbers from slhondaparts.com, it seems that the 94 cx and 97 cx had different speedo-gears, but the 94 cx and 97 dx have the same part number.
If we have a dx tranny, it seems there will be no issue. How can I determine if the tranny is from a CX, DX, EX, etc? It says S40 on it...
Any suggestions? Thanks

S40 is a 96-00 case, and to determine the insides is with other stamps on the case, they go something like PXX-AXXX where the PXX is the part number for the case, and the AXXX correspondes to the internals. P2J is DX I think....
A dealer would know what those last 6 letters are, they replaced the Pxx-Axxx stamping with a 6 letter identifier on the serial tag on 96-00 transmissions.
There is a VIN tag that says EJ6. I recall seeing a website that lists those codes...I'll check around but if anyone knows what model an EJ6 is, lemme know, thanks!

answers.com says:
EJ6 = Civic 2/3/4 Door 1.6L

honda swap says
4 = Civic DX 4-door
4 = Civic EX 2/4 Door
4 = CR-V w/o ABS
4 = Accord DX 4-Door (1998)
4 = Accord LX w/ABS 2/4-door
4 = Civic Del Sol S
4 = Odyssey LX 6 Passenger
4 = Prelude S
4 = Prelude VTEC (1997)
4 = w/o SH pkg. Prelude (1998)
4 = CR-V LX (1998)
so it's either from a del sol s, civic ex or civic dx. i think.
