What to look for?¿?
Hi all
First, I'm completely new to Hondas. Currently I'm a Mercedes owner. However, my Mercedes is a huge piece of crap and I'm looking for an efficient and affordable daily driver that will carry me for a year or two while I save for another, better condition, old Mercedes.
I have found a 1993 Acura Vigor which I am going to look at tonight. The guy is asking $1400. It has 123,000 miles and appears from the pictures to be in good overall condition. I believe it is a 5-speed which is a plus. I have yet to see the car in person, but the seller says that the oil drain plug was stripped and the oil pan cracked during an oil change about two months ago. Also, the ABS light is on. Apparently he had the oil plug welded in place and the car does not leak any oil. Since then the car has been sitting.
I'm a DIYer as much as possible. I've already priced oil pans and if I'm not mistaken they run $400ish + gaskets and all of that. However, rather than fix this engine I have found several JDM G25 engines on ebay for about $650ish after shipping. This seems like the better option to me. So oil problem aside, what kind of brake problems do these cars experience? Can I simply disconnect the ABS system and drive with normal brakes? These cars have a single piston caliper right? Also, I'll probably go ahead and replace all the rubber stuff since she's been sitting for a few months.
What other common issues should I look out for? Obviously I plan to check the car thoroughly for rust since I am in the midwest. I'll drive it and look for drips and all that. My car is a 1982, so I assume that this 1993 Acura will have many more electronics than mine. Are there any common electrical issues?
I appreciate any input so feel free to tell me about even the most minor details and problems. Hopefully this car will work out and I will get the chance to get to know some of you guys that are into the Japanese cars as well as I have gotten to know some of the German car enthusiasts.
