Hello, I have a 88 crx si. Basically I have bad tie rod ends so there is a very small amount of play in the steering. However when I brake it causes the whole front end of the car to kind of rattle and vibrate, it doesnt do that when im going slow.Im not sure if this could be because of warped rotors or Bad tie rod ends or both. If anyone can help that would be great.

 

Most likely it's a combination of the whole front end being loose, not just the tie rods. If it is the rotors, then you should get a pulsing feeling from the brake pedal when you are putting on the brakes. With the age of your car, unless the front end bushings have been replaced, your most likely just seeing it shake it's legs.

 

if your tie rods are bad, your rack end bushing in your steering rack is probably bad as well, which will also cause the vibration when stopping. if you get new rotors, or hve yours machined, replace the tie rods and rack end bushing, you most likely will not have vibration issues any more, after you get an alignment of course.

my crx did the same thing so i went to autozone and picked up two rotors at about 13 bucks a piece and the rattle is gone, though it does vibrate a little sometimes at speeds around 70-80 when i hit the brakes. But replacing the rotors brought the vibration down considerably and it was cheap to fix so i recommend that first.

 

Thanks everyone. After I figured out how to search the archives, I found an article that suggested rack end bushings. I think Im gonna drop the steering rack here soon and get to replacing all of that stuff. But first I got a water pump to deal with.

 

you should check ur rotors first. u can simply run ur fingers on the rotor to feel for warpness. And redoin ur rack and pinion is no easy task, i would recomend just buying a rebuilt one,or have urs rebuilt. trust me.

 

make sure to replace the belt well ur already there. saves u alot of headaches.

 

Well I just looked and a rebuilt rack set is about $150.Problem is that they say it is made for CRX with power steering, My rex does not have power steering. What gives? Where can I find THE CORRECT steering rack?
