Looking for speakers and head unit
Ok guys, I have a '92 accord dx with stock unit and stock speakers. The car got handed down to me and i want to replace the speakers and the head unit. I need four 6-1/2" speakers and a head unit that plays cds/mp3. I would like to keep it under $400. $300 would be perfect... please help!
Here’s a good setup that won’t bust your bank account:
Sony CDX-GT310 ($130)
Four Sony GT1625A (6.5”) speakers ($70 per pair, so $140)
Total = $220 before a $20 mail-in rebate. This includes a $50 instant rebate for buying a Sony receiver and four Sony speakers.
If this interests you, the $50 Sony instant rebate expires this Saturday, the fourteenth.
Also look for scratch & dent or outlet items to save more money. For example… right now you can get the Sony GT410U for $135 (outlet), and one of the sets of speakers at $60 (scratch and dent), so you would pay $215 before the $20 mail-in rebate. This is very close to what I put into my ’95 Camry a month ago. I put in the GT410U (has a USB port in front, just load a flash drive with .mp3s and plug it in), these 6.5” speakers, and a pair of 4.5” speakers. Paid $205 after the $50 instant rebate, I bought it two days before the $20 mail-in rebates began.
If you really want to spend all of the $400, of course that can be done also. This is the good and cheap route. And since it's from Crutchfield, all kits / harnesses / instruction sheets / shipping etc will be included in the price.

Infinity Kappa component set
Any deck that interfaces with an iPod
This will get you good sound and a deck that offers the ability to add music through an iPod. If you want great sound, you going to be spending $300-$400 on the deck alone that has a good sound processor.

I would expect the Sony head unit to last at least five years based on other Sony items I’ve bought over the years. The Sony setup is good and cheap - It’ll be much better that the stock radio / speakers currently in your car. Like I said before, I just put the Sony system in my ’95 Camry a month ago for $205, there is no comparison between the old system and the Sony system.
That being said, if you want really good sound and don’t mind spending the $300 to $400, then take a look at the Alpine CDA-9883, $200 (includes a free iPod adapter). Add in another $150 to $200 for speakers, and you’re pushing the $400 mark but the sound will be very good. I bought a new Alpine in 2000 (CDA-7839), it’s in my Volvo right now, it has very good sound and is still working great (yes, I have too many cars).
You can get a better sounding system than the Sony system, but not for anything close to $200 (you'll be at $350 to $400).

I’m pretty sure that your Creative .mp3 player would work on the Sony GT410U (the receiver that I bought), since the GT410U has the USB port in front and the Creative connects to the computer via a USB port. The GT410U also has an AUX input (stereo mini-jack).
Personally, I don’t use my .mp3 player (Sandisk Sansa) in my car - I just have a 2-GB flash drive loaded with .mp3s. When I want variety I just plug it directly into the USB port on the radio. Since it’s a standard flash drive I can add / remove music at my computer whenever I want or I can delete the music and use it to transport other files between computers.

If you go the Sony route…
The Sony GT410U (the one with the USB port) is at $135 for the “outlet store” model. This means that it was a returned item but is supposed to be in perfect shape – I did this on my GT410U and everything was still sealed but the remote was missing – Crutchfield sent me a replacement remote without any problems. Take the outlet store model. On the speakers, take the scratch and dent pair and then take the regular pair (they probably have just one scratch and dent). So… $135 + $70 + $60 - $50 = $215 though there’ll also be a $20 mail in rebate. Remember that the $50 instant rebate for buying a Sony head unit and four Sony speakers expires on Saturday.
If you want to save another $20, I can send you a referral code via Honda-tech’s private message system. When you use the code, you’ll save $20 instantly (so $195 before $20 mail in rebate) and I’ll get $20 off of my next order – this is assuming that you are a first time Crutchfield customer (otherwise it won’t work).
