Transmission case weld
Hello all. I had the "worlds greatest mechanic" do a motor swap (b18b into a 96 cx hatch). He put a GSR transmission in and only put the top mount/bracket. I asked about the missing front bracket and was told that it wouldn't cause any problem...two busted axles and one dipped transmission later i guess he was wrong. The top of the transmission broke off from the bracket leading to the mount. I looked high and low for a GSR case but have been unsuccessful and getting a whole new transmission bugs me because i know the transmission is fine internally. My solution: get the front bracket, throw that on and get the top bracket welded back on to the transmission where the break is. I was just curious. Is this a bad idea? Should i keep searching for the case? HELP ME PLEASE!!!
ok for one very bad idea two the vibration mount in the front missing didnt cause that i have never used them in any swap i have done and i drag race every wed at the track and i have never broken a case i think you need to recheck your setup instead of blaming someone for something that would not have caused the problm
yeah, to have this welded properly to the point it would have similar strength to a used case, you would have to spend so much money. aluminum can't just be welded up with a mig welder.
since you've had all these problems that seem to lend to a mount missing, i would put that missing mount on and try to sell the internals to someone who rebuilds tranys.

No offense hybrid but I have more than enough reason to blame these guys. They gave me a wrong ecu the first time. And this is the second transmission since the swap. The first one was busted and i KNEW it was busted. But they told me i had to break it in. The grinding i was getting was normal. Come to find out it was crapped out just like i said (2 months to get a new one and install it). Also 3 new dents, Paint droppings all over the hood because they left it where they do body work. And have you ever heard of a 8 month motor swap. Because thats how long it took to do mine. I have more than enough reason to blame em. But thanks for the info guys. I will take it to a speed shop and have it checked out. Because i can't find the problem. If anyone else has an idea of what might be wrong just let me know. Thanks again.

8 months to do a swap isnt bad if the shop is really busy. at my shop we have a del sol with a b16 turbo swap waiting to be installed..we've had the car for 4+ months now. we just dont have the time for big projects like that, and the customer knows. did the shop u went to tell u the swap was gonna take a while?
on the other hand..paint droppings and dents =
my shop would def take the blame and fix it
but anyway....welding the bracket on the transmission housing is a bad idea. junkyard for a new transmission..and if u know for a fact that ur internals are better than the junkyards internals...swap internals. its some work, but its do-able

I caught the mechanic working on his own car on more than one occasion. They told me it was an easy swap and wouldn't take long at all. Did i mention that i did the B18 swap because of a failed vtec head swap on my old D16? And by failed i mean he destroyed the motor in the process. Sorry for rambling on about these guys. Back to the point. Thanks for the info. I'll go to the junk yard and see what they have. Can i get any b-series hydro case or does it have to be from a GSR Transmission? Thanks again.

Just to let you know that if that car that you got the motor out of was wrecked that is a comon place for the tranny to break from the force of the accident... Maybe he didnt look at it before the swap and the front tourque mount not being there let the weight be a bit much and it finally gave... My motor had the same problem when i took it out of the wrecked car...

I did three motor swaps in my front yard after work one day lol. I had to take my motors and swap them around between my cars. I dont understand what can take shops so long I refuse to take my car anywhere unless its just something pretty crazy hard, which hasent happened yet :/
