first i would start it , then it would start to raddle at 3000 rpm. then when i redid the timing it got louder. i know its not my valves cause i have gone over them over and over. im sartin to think its a rod. but does the tensioner raddle when it goes bad?

No, it will growl and perhaps whine depending on what phase it is in during failure. It will whine to start, from lack of lube, then it will growl when the bearing tears itself apart.

Water pumps will do the same thing, but the load placed on the water pump is usually enough to permit a growl only, because the water pump begins to cavitate.

Do you have A/C, if so, the tensioner pulley could be loose, in oder to adjust that, the 14mm bolt that secures the pulley to the bracket must be loosened, and the the 12mm adjustment nut can be turned to pull it up or down, if you forget to tighten that 14mm, that will cause a rattle.

If it begins to stick they can make a very unpleasant ticking sound in the head, that can sound like a ping. Easy way to tell that is to pull the valve cover off and look at the VTEC lobe wear patterns, if it looks like its skipping over a part of it, or looks really blotchy, it could be clogging up.

Taking those things out is a pain though, requires an almost complete dissassembly of the head if it is a B series head. Rockers and all. (cam doesn't need to be removed in the single cam Honda's, rockers still need to come off.)

Ouch, you will have to jack the motor up to get the rocker shafts to clear (mine hit the fender slightly) It was a pain for me, I was doing the H22 LMA swap and ITR springs for my type r cams.
