5spd Swap Worth It? Please Read
I know this topic has been covered, but I am going to approach it a different way. I have an 01 EX Coupe. I am now on my 3rd automatic transmission (POS) and it crapped on me. I am getting tired of putting the money into the car for the auto to fail again. I have tried to sell the car outright...with bad trans....... and no bites yet.
Would it be worth it to do the 5spd swap and be done with it? I have done one on my old accord so I am fairly familiar with what it needs. Any tips on doing it? I do not want to replace the whole interior harness, so if anyone knows a way around it PM me please. I know on the accord I had to jump the neutral safety plug. Thanks guys

how did you go though 3 tranny's ? neutral bombed the hell out of it? and i think you only need the 5spd computer after you swap it not the whole harness but, im not sure though, otherwise i would say do it
I wish I could say that I did so that there would be a reason....... If you do some reading, the auto tranny's in the 01-02 range are notorious for going out. They are POS.
weird that you've gone through 3 though. people say the manual transmission is more reliable, i dont know, i haven't had any problems with mine. sometimes i wish my car was auto though, i sometimes get tired of driving manual but at the same time i like it.
hard to say what you should do, it's pretty much up to your pockets. if you want to sell it why not replace the transmission and sell it right after. i believe 03-05 auto tranny's will work on your car too, they are the same engine.

Honda's in general are garbage today. I wonder how they still get away selling all these cars when their auto trannies crap out after 70k.
My advice to you is dump your car on a dealer. Don't bother with the swap.

my auto tranny on my 01 acura el died at about 242,000 kms. I did the swap to manual. it cost alot to do it. but in my situation it was what i wanted to do. i couldnt sell my car to a dealer and get nothing for it. plus all the mods ive done since i bought it brand new. considering the amount of kms i put on it im surprised it didnt die earlier.
I had to change the computer, drive axles(auto ones may pop out), wiring harness, plus all the resevoirs etc etc. I didnt want to put another auto tranny in.
u have to justify what u wanna do with the car. For me, Im keeping this car till it dies. If ur gonna do it, be patient and good luck!

i've heard the same on the 01-02 manual. the only thing you need is the tranny (duh!) shifter assembly, pedal assembly, clutch master and slave and the associated hard, rubber line and the fluid resevoir the same harness and computer can be used the same as you sd with the neutral bypass... it's not too bad on the money as long as it is an 03 and up tranny for a decent price. all the oem parts came out to 250$ not including the tranny

and calling honda crap cars, well my buddy had (no point in keep it) an altima v6 and went through 3 trannies by 24k miles

Don't bother man, for 01 civic and tranny swap, especially auto to manual? it's just too much to think about. $2000 will not guarantee it's gonna be happily ever after. Just drop it on a dealer and get a new civic.
I had to change my computer to manual when I did the swap. The auto ecu wouldnt let me rev past 4000 rpm. The swap can be done in your garage, but having a hoist and a bay definetely makes it easier. Its not cheap and you will need some patience. Let me know if you have any questions through the process.
Good Luck with whatever you do!

Thanks guys for all of the responses. I am once again trying to sell the car as is, or trade. What do you guys think the car is worth with just a bad tranny. All stock, 165k on body and 25k on newer motor. Thanks

Honda's today are far less reliable than ones of the early 90's. I got rid of my Nissan many years ago. I have had 1 Nissan and 8 Hondas since I've been driving.

There are also a lot more Honda's sold now than there were in the early 1990's.
To keep quality up while increasing production is no easy task, and I bet if you look at problems per 100 cars, it's about the same as it was then.
And Honda automatics are notorious piles of ****, and have been from day one. Legends, Vigors, Accords, all from the early 1990's, are notorious for auto transmission failure.
If you buy a Honda, you're going to buy a manual transmission, or look at a different manufacturer.
