Default GET A GOOD SHOP MANUAL!!

Once again I am AMAZED at the number of questions regularly addressed in SHOP MANUALS! How in the hell does ANYONE work on ANY car without a good shop-manual? About 75% of these posts could be deleted if the writers spent a few dollars and bought a shop-manaul specific to their car!

Haynes writes a good manaul, but if you are SERIOUS about working on your car, spring the $75 or so and get a HELMS (helms.com). I have done extensive restoration on my 1994, and the Helms has more diagrams and spec-sheets.

I am not the worlds best mechanic (although pretty good after 30 years busting bolts in my own cars), and I NEVER tear down anything I haven't worked on before without opening the manaul, studying the diagrams, spec-sheets and teardown procedures. At this time, I make a complete parts list so I don't end up driving 3X to the store or placing 2-3 different parts orders on line. The beforehand study gets all the parts ready, and I already have the entire teardown nailed BEFORE I even grab a wrench.

PLEASE, if you are SERIOUS, get a manual. I really am starting to wonder if maybe the younger generation cannot read? (tongue-in-cheek/ but why don't they just buy a @#$%^&* repair manual???) Wrenchy

I always buy a shop manual for every car or truck I own. They always end up saving me more money than they cost. Even things that seem simple enough like changing the coolant, can be done wrong, and cause problems. If you plan to work on your own car, GET A MANUAL.

I have already diagnosed a problem with my 03 Accord using the shop manual (Helm). It has paid for itself already, the rest is gravy.

This forum would be almost dead if everyone had a good shop manual and was able to fully understand it and do the work 100% right... Shop manuals are expensive for some people and hard to understand which is why they turn to the forum for more experienced people to lend a hand. No one is forcing anyone with a gun to answer questions around here.

However not using the SEARCH button is the biggest problem imo.

i dont think the fourm would be dead, but it would be alot more informed. There also would be a lot more new and fresh ideas made from joint thoughts of intelligent car enthusiast.

I think alot of kids just dont want to learn about their car, they just want to throw stuff at it that other people have so they think they will fit in.

If people knew even slight basics about cars, we wouldent have posts like "What wire do I cut to get vtech? Help I need boost!" When someone posts that, it says that they dont understand what v-tec is, or boost for that matter.

Same kids who run to the store to get a light weight strut bar, performance w rated tires and throw on huge chrome 19's on their car. Whats the point? if your going to modify your car, you cant just throw parts at it just because someone else has it. It hurts my brain to talk to some of the kids that roll into my shop. "hey dude, can u install lowering spring on my car? .....what about a muffler?....and these 20" rims" I just dont get it.

thank you, i once was like that but quickly grew out of it. let's clear this up right now for those who are idealists like me. CHROME + MAJORITY OF HONDAS = NEGATIVE CORRELATION.

i went to advance auto parts looking for some temp. spacers because i didnt think my 225/40/18 tires would fit in the back and the guy who asked me if i need help says "just go on ebay and get some coilovers they're only like $39.99" and i'm thinkin that they would last what a solid 4 weeks? if that.

i paid $21.27 for my haynes manual and i doubt i will post as i did when i first came to HT unless i feel i can't get the answer i need from the book.. search button is equivalent of easy button and should be used...i don't follow all these guidelines but hey i try, i'm just being literal though
