JL 500/1 Review, Already Searched
I tried to search for this but it keeps coming up with "Page Not Found"...might be my browser, idk.
Im looking at getting a used JL 500/1 mono sub amp for my 2 Infinity REF-1052W subs and then later ill b getting a single Alpine Type-R SWR-1022D or Infinity Perfect10vq.
What im wondering is how well the amp will perform with the selected subwoofers....or just the amp itself?
I am looking for an amp with great SQ in my 1999 Civic EX 4Door; I heard the JL 500/1 amps are good so I thought I would get a few opinions on the amp before I buy. All I find on the internet is, "plays great!" "Loud BOOM!"...crap like that.
Another option is to see what one 250/1 JL amps sound like with one of the Reference subs and then add another one later if I want it louder; If I addone later and want to run the 1 alpine type-r subs or the kappa perfect subs, would I be able to run the 2 amps in parallel to the one sub and have it work alright? I havnt ran 2 amps to power 1 sub before but I think I have heard of it done.
Thanks for your time

Im thinking about it all. I just started getting into the mood of getting subs again. My other amp sucked *****(Kenwood KAC-7201). Well, im all about going for really good amps so to me it sucked. Also for the price tag, it was a pretty cheap amp.
Im just taking everything in to what I want to get.
What im thinking of doing now is getting the 250/1 and the 10W3v3 sub. Im looknig for soundquality 100% so after looking at the JL subs ill look to see what people think about the 10W3v3 with the 250/1.
One question is, how far under rated is the JL amps? some people I have talked to say the 250/1 is actually 300-350; is that true?

those slash series amps are sensitive as ****. just remember, if you're wire connections arent clean, you'll be running to a lot of problems down the line. this could be said to most amps, but these amps are the most pickiest ive seen by far.

what are you meaning sensitive? All amps wont perform with shitty power/ground connections. I shouldnt have a problem with wire connections at all

So true...
everything has to be perfect

like i said before, i've had plenty of amps in my day [same wiring setup, direct swap] and when i installed the 500/1, bass comes and goes, amp turns on and off when it wants to. i re-resanded my ground to absolute bare metal. worked perfectly for a few days, and it came back. i was close to selling the amp, but i upgraded all my power wires to 1 gauge and finally it never gave me a problem then. my point is not that it needs one gauge or not, im just saying those slash series are picky as fvck, if you will. do some research on the car audio forums and you will see others that have these kinds of problems as well.
i totally agree
my 500/1 power stays on but its sound cuts out as it pleases
i hate how picky this JL amp is compared to everything i've used in the past
but whens its working properly its a great amp...

I've been running my 500/1 to a pair for eclipse aluminum's for a couple years now. sure im under powering the subs a little bit but you wouldn't be able to tell by the way they sound. one big thing is out of all the sub amps I've run before this is the only one i cant get to overheat or go into protect if i even tried. its the most efficient and cool running amp that i have experienced.
I have switched my mind from the 500/1 to the 250/1 powering either a 10w3v2 or a 12w3v2. would the 250/1 work well with either of those subs? I want bump but i dont want to have all the speakers overpowered by the subs. some people i heard of sold ther 500/1 since it was "too loud"
Run the wires suggested in the installation manual, and you won't have any issues.
I have a 300/4 and plan on adding a second, as well as a 250/1. For this setup JL recommends 2ga wire from the battery at a minimum, with 4ga going to each amplifier

Been running a JL 500/1 for about 4 years now. Just have a Boston pro 12 on it. I love this amp. Regards to how much power they put out. I read a review last week it said that the 500/1 puts out roughly 730 watts peek give or take 50 watts. I also run a 300/2 so for my fronts. Also if your looking for sound rather then spl. I would try to keep the amps closer to 4 ohms as possible. Even though they can handle 1.5 ohms quality tends to suffer. Also look into a player that has higher output RCAs levels 2 volts vs 4-5 volt preouts.
A few things....
IMO all the JL Audio "slash" series amps are good amps, some of the best amps for the price, top 5-10 amps on the market.

JL Audio slash series amps have a "regulated power supply", [R.I.P.S.] the amps output is as stated into 1.5 ohms to 4 ohms @ 11V-14.5V, EG, the 500/1 makes 1x500W RMS into 1.5-4 ohms @11-14.5 volts, no more no less.
There is no such thing a "too much power" although there is a point of diminishing return, the saying, "your better to be over-powered then underpowered" is true, although not accurate, overpowering a speaker will damage it just as under powering it will, the diff. is it is a lot easier to damage a speaker when it is under powered, it is not the under-powering the damages the speaker, it is driving an underpowered amp into constant clipping that damages the speaker, you can drive a 300W speaker with 100 RMS all day long and not damage the speaker, however drive that amp into continuous clipping and you will destroy the speaker in no time at all.
If you have a sub system, [low-pass] that is "overpowering"/louder then the rest of the speakers, [high-pass], or the amp is "overpowered" for the speaker it is driving, turn the gain on the amp down.

Whatever you get, make sure they match, [amp and sub] and ideally be overpowered, remember the amp has a gain control.
Also, whatever amp you get it is critical that it is installed and wired properly.
