Alright, I checked the FAQ section on here, and I searched, but obviously, hx is too small to register in the search. Also, I tried searching for vtec-e and come up with nil.

I'm looking into buying an HX for my DD due to fuel economy. I was wondering if putting after market stuff on vtec-e motors has an ill effect on the fuel economy. I'm talking little stuff like an i/h/e. Also, I've heard that doing swaps in HXs are difficult compared to DX or EX cars. Any chance you guys could either point me in the correct direction, or answer my ?'s.

 

well, i'm assuming your civic is a 1996-2000 model since 1992-1995 never had an hx trim. The hx trim came with a D16Y5. I don't see why a few bolt ons would hurt the mpg on your engine. Just don't add anything that would alter it too much, which i wouldn't think you would if you're keeping it a dd with good mileage. The D16y5 in the hx trim all came w/ 115hp @ 6300 rpm. Remember though, that's hp, not Whp.

And someone correct me if i'm wrong, but i don't know why swapping out a d16y5 from the hx would be MUCH different than most other trims.

 

The only thing I could think of is that you'd have to swap out a new transmission also, I'm unsure if you could throw in another d-series with that trans. A D is a D, but that's kind of a weird one.

 

The exhaust may be difficult because the cat is right on the primaries if I'm not mistaken.

I/H/E should actually improve your mpg.

The best mod you can do to an HX is to swap in a EX/Si tranny. Your city driving mpg wont be affected but your highway mpg certainly will. With the tranny swap, the HX actually runs a bit faster than the EX.

 

y5 head is the best sohc head, has roller rocker arms. if u buy a header, buy one for an ex and use an ex cat and exhaust. and the gearing in that trans is garbage

I don't own one yet, still gotta sell the Legend. I'm using it as a DD while I'm in college and commuting 47 miles one way for visiting my boy every other weekend. I just wanted to make sure the HX would have swap potential later on in it's life. It would be swapped with a B-series most likely, unless K swaps become affordable for some reason.

I heard that the wiring for vtec-e is goofy compared to "regular" vtec.

 

i got a hx and when i put i/h/e on it a while back the gas mileage wasnt so good..still better than alot of cars out there but i got about 400 to the tank before and after the add on's about 380ish..but now i get 300+-...turbo'd

 

Did you boost the HX motor, if so, what tranny are you using? Also, did you use a kit, or build your own? PM me with details please

 

I know that question wasn't directed toward me, but look into piecing together your own if you ever decide to go that route. Other than more flexibility in what parts you want, it allows you to spend much less money (or more money if you're not careful).

 

Yeah, I know the build it yourself route is almost always more efficient and usually cheaper if done right. Just curious as to what he did.

 

My VX has vtec-E, and i have I/E on it. It's still getting the same mileage, maybe a lil less after I started driving it .. my dad owned it for the first 13 years. As far a swap goes, I believe its the same as any other 92-95 hatch....

Not only is the wiring exactly the same, but the solenoid itself is also exactly the same.

The vtec-e has wiring for an EGR valve where as y8 vtec does not. Changing the intake on the y5 motor would be stupid, the EGR valve is one of the reason for the fuel effiency along with the way the vtec and valves work. I have a y8 block, transmission and complete exhaust system with a y5 head and intake and can easily get over 40 mpg combined without babying it. Fuel economy increase when I installed a greddy catback, high flow cat and ex exhaust header.

oh yea im using the stock tranny which sometimes is good and sometimes bad depending on the other car your going against..buy i build my own kit cause im cheap like that =p

 

EGR and VTEC solenoid are different circuits with thier own seperate wires. They're two completely different systems. You can download the Helms and look at the wiring diagram if you'd like.

The VTEC solenoid and wiring on the HX is in fact the same as on the EX.

EGR is emissions related and probably hurts gas mileage if it has any effect at all. Some exhaust is redirected back into the combustion chamber under certain conditions in order to cool down the combustion temp and bring down NO emissions.

 

I know for Legends, they make an EGR block off plate. Anything like that a good idea???
