Does this to me on occasion when its cold out. Try pumping the clutch a few times before doing it. As to why it does it, may be due to low fluids, or some other internal tranny issue.

That would explain allot. Worn/busted splines on a pressure plate will not let a clutch disengage correctly, causing gear grinds. Make a note to make the clutch your next project.

Exedy stage one is a very popular upgrade. I am very pleased with mine. WEll worth every dollar for the avg of $295 (depending where you buy from)

Yes, that was the avg price i paid for mine.
Yes its the complete kit, disk, pressure plate, Throwout bearing, alignment tool and lube.
Its awsome, as soon as you install it, its a night/day difference to stock, much stiffer clutch pedal feel and its much more grippy than stock. As i had mentioned, worth every single dollar for a daily driver car.

does your car feel like it has slightly more torque because of the extra grabbing of the flywheel?

I wouldnt go as far as to say it feels like it has "more torque", but the response from before vs after was significant. Got allot more tire chirping

Could bang thru gears and not be concerend about damaging your clutch as much.

You're SUPPOSED to put your clutch to the floor when you change gears. If you haven't been putting the pedal to the floor and shifting gears, you would end up with clutch and trans. problems. Or do you mean you have to have the pedal off the floor to get it out of gear?

The OP's symptoms were that of a worn clutch in general, having trouble getting in and out of gear(s). Worn clutches will do this at the end of their lifespan.
