upgrading stock subwoofer on Si
I'm looking to drop-in an aftermarket sub. is it as easy as plug 'n play? can i just swap out a new one for the stock component or is there more to it?
theres more to it. First you need to find a sub that will fit and sounds good playing in "free air". Good luck with that. I took the factory sub out and used the hole as "port" i have a single 12 in my trunk and it sounds pretty good. I tapped into the factory sub signal so i still have sub control from my deck.
i want to keep the stock setup of 1 8" sub hanging from the package self.
how is the constuction of a "free air" sub different than a "boxed" sub?

probably should pick up a JL audio 8" sub, aftermarket amp, and a line level converter to run off of the factory sub wires to keep the sub control. just my thoughts. have not looked too closely at my factory sub (i work at circuit city in the car stereo install bay

good link, and i do understand that stuff. But how would one sub be good in "free air" and another may not? How can you tell before buying?

Would i have to have the extra stuff like an amp n stuff to support a better than stock sub?

It will tell you in the specs if its designed to play in free air or not.
Yes you will need an aftermarket amp and power kit to supply enough power to your new sub
