Hey guys i have a 92 Hatchback with a LS motor with a GSR tranny my Q is about the short shifter when i go to 5th gear the shifter looks like it is in neutral and i can wobble it side to side like when its on neutral but it is in gear and it does this in all gears. anyone know what it is?
It can wobble from side to side a bit when in gear. Now for your neutral question I really dont know what to say. Maybe thats just the way it is. What brand is it?
i think u put the shifter in backwards. happend to a friend of mine...he did it himself in his eg and it looked retareded..as described above...so he fliped it around..and problem solved.

check to see if the shifter is backwards, if it is correct that, and get a set of nice shifter bushings like energy suspension they are dirt cheap and do a good job of tightening your linkage back up

It's probably the bushings - how much movement are we talking about here? Don't say it moves like neutral b/c I doubt it moves all the way from the 5th gear fork to the 1st gear fork.
Just put it in 5th , move it all the way to the right, then move it all the way to the left (without pulling it down any) - and estimate the distance - it's probably the bushings...iono anything about that "shifter in backwards" thing - I've done stupid **** before, but never that.

like stated above, the shifter is no doubt backwards and the looseness is from the bushings. They are very inexpensive to get replacements for and take very little time to change out.

aww I just searched and found that some aftermarket linkages DO have removalble bolts
But anyway.. where the bolts are, that area could have become loose/worn which is MY case of wiggly-shifteritis

Have you ever seen a shift linkage? I've seen people install shifter backwards because they like it better that way.

No I used to have this problem too and you could damn near move the shifter from 5th gear all the way to the first position while in gear. At the end of the shifter there should be some bushing where the actual shifter hooks meets the shift linkage. The problem with aftermarket shifter is that they are usually much narrower than the stock shifter. This way when you shifter it slides back and fourth before it even moves the shift linkage. Hope this helps. The best way you can check is jack the car up crawl under and look where the shifter meets the linkage. Check for any gaps.

there's more pressure moving the shifter over into the 5th/rev position becsuse you are fighting the reverse lockout spring.
