downshifting question
is it ok if i downshift and the car pulls excessively. i do it usually downshifting from 4th to 3rd to stop at a red light before i go to neutral. maybe i'm still goin too fast? is it bad?
i heard it's better to downshift rather thatn simply goin to neutral but ya that's much easier.
and ya letting go of the clutch slower is probably something i should watch. but do i hav to be at a certain speed for it to be safe?

i personally don't think so but its debatable

I downshift from 5th all the way down to 2nd but only letting go of the clutch slowly so you can feel that gradual slowing down. You do it too fast then you'll fell that sudden jerk between gears. I go to neutral when im almost to a complete stop.
You should rev match, give a quick blip of the throttle before letting off on the clutch. You'll be amazed at how smooth it is. How much blip should be determined by your speed and the gear your switching too. This is why racers learn the toe-heel downshift method, to keep the car stable through the turns while decelerating. On top of that you come out of the turn in the right gear.
On the streets though, which would you rather replace, the transmission or brake pads? downshifting can be addicting, but Its not really necessary on the streets.

Also, people who are new to downshifting should be VERY careful with the rsx-s 6 speed. Wrong gear and your screwed, hear about it on the forums all the time. (ex: 6 to 4, 5 to 1)

i agree. id much rather just shift to neutral and brake than downshift and let my engine slow me down. cheaper and easier to replace brake pads than a transmission.
the only reason i see for downshifting to slow down at a light is so im ready to accelerate again in case of an emergency.

mind if I ask why 6 to 4 is dangerous? 5 to 1 being a bad idea makes sense obviously. But when I stop, i release the clutch very slowly. If Im cruisng in 6th i go to 4th then 2nd the neutral. If im in 5th I go 3rd to neutral. Is that a bad idea?
It all depends on what rpm you're in. Downshifting is not bad for your car. I do it all the time to slow down my car instead of putting excessive wear on my brakes and to speed up my car when i'm going to slow. You have to have a feel for your car before you start just downshifting. I slowly let the clutch go to get the feel of the car before i actually fully let the clutch out. You've got to know how your car is, is what it boils down to.
never downshift to 1st at all unless you're in 2nd and your going about 5 mph or less. Besides 1st has a lockout to where you can't downshift to first if you're going faster then like 5 or 10 mph.
i agree with the rev-matching..
i do it almost everytime i'm slowing to a stop...it is very addicting
but it can be much smoother..it's fun for me..and the practice helps for when you wanna be a touge beast and grip a couple turns..haha
it's all your preference though..but yeah to get rid of the pulling..either ease off the clutch slower...just throw it into neutral..or start practicing with rev-matching..

Rev Matching is hitting the gas while the clutch is still down in order to rev the cars RPM up to the RPM its going to be when you let of the clutch, its not easy and you need to know your car and your gearing pretty well.
btw Rev Matching ftmfw!
here is an ok video for info

not that much, if you over rev when rev matching then i guess so but once you get good you should be able to rev match to the rpm pretty well, its still better using a little more gas then the wear on your tranny.
