F20C Sleeves...
My buddy has a 02 S. Its turboed with only 13,000 miles. It has some piston slap so we want to put new rods and pistons in it. I heard that the sleeves on a F20C cannot be honed. We were told that you have to put new sleeves in instead. Is that true? also how much psi/hp can the sleeves handle?
Thank you all
Thank you all
there are no scratches. the motor is practically brand new. we want to put new pistons and rods in it and are wondering if the sleeves are honable or need to be replaced along with the pistons etc.

I don't think you have to resleeve... how else would they do the stroker kit? They stroke and bore the **** out of the f20... But I may be wrong...

Capt. obvious in the house!!
Of course it would be better man. While you are at it p&p the head... hell, go ahead and build the *** end too.. New rear diff FTW!
Sorry just in a shitty/sarcastic mood...

well anyways. seeing how nody has chimed in to prove me wrong. the i guess it isnt true. the sleeves can be honed. all i wanted to know was if the sleeves were like the late model H22's that have the weird sleeves in them...

Yes the f20 has fiber reinforced sleeves similar to the h series. I think wiseco supposedly has forged pistons that you can run but I haven't heard much about them. Basically you need sleeves if you wanna go forged.

yes we do have fiber reinforced sleeves, but we also have forged internals from the factory

I should have clarified, aftermarket forged pistons which tend to expand much more than the OEM pistons which run VERY tight piston to wall clearances.
Also, according to the service manual, you can overbore up to .25mm with OEM oversized pistons however they lay out very specific steps for honing and a machine shop w/o the right equipment are likely to f this up.

What you just wrote is soooo far from the truth

Make sure it's a line hone. And yes, they are similar to the H22 sleeves.

ok now that i got the info i was looking for i can move onto my real issue.
My friends F20C S has a total of 19000 miles on the car and motor. its turbocharged with a ultimate racing kit. (im new to S's so i have no idea if tahts a good brand). he is the second owner and bought it taht way. anyways, the motor had a knock, like a pistons slap, we already looked at the rod beraings and they are in great shape as expected. We are thinging possible the wrist pins are damaged.. i doub that. But we did a compression test do the rings/ringlands are good.
any other ideas?

As long as the motor is stock you're not hearing piston slap. You get slap when you have too much piston to wall clearance and the piston rocks back and forth in the bore. If everything is oem the clearances should be nice and tight. How loud is it? Wrist pins could be a possibility. Where on the motor is it coming from? You should listen with an automotive stethoscope they work real good.
I personally havnt inspected it.. my friend did.. he wants to take the head off... if we pull the poistons out it will tell us if its piston slap...
and the old screw driver to an ear trick works too!

Well a few months ago I had baddd piston slap on cylinder 1. Pulled the head and sure enough the cylinder wall was scratched all the hell up.....See the pic.....

I think the s2000's have that nikasil coating....Someone correct me if im wrong...on spelling too...lol.
They cant do much with them without getting them re-coated in that stuff...which is $$$. So I got mine bored and sleeved with darton sleeves and just got all new forged internals.
