system setup, good?
i just bought a system and was wondering what you guys think of it. i bought a 12" kicker solobaric L7 and an MTX Ta5601 mono amp. here and the specs for both.
sub and box
* Peak Power : 1500 W
* RMS Power : 750 W
* Nominal Impedance : 4 Ohm
* Enclosure Dimensions :
o Top Surface Depth : 14-11/16"
o Bottom Surface Depth : 18"
o Height : 16"
o Width : 18-3/4"
the amp
# 1 MTX TA5601 Amplifier
# 600 Watts RMS 2 Ohm
# 300 Watts RMS 4 Ohm
# Number Of Channels: 1
# Built In Crossover: Yes
# Thunder Mono high-performance car subwoofer amplifier featuring patented class D output
# 300 watts RMS x 1 at 4 ohms (600 watts x 1 at 2 ohms)
# Xtant Technology Cooling (XTC) - Thermal-regulated turbo-charged fan intercooler
# PrizmEFX accent lighting effects - Customizable to match your vehicle's interior
# Semi-unregulated MOSFET power supply
# Overload and thermal protection
# StreetWires connection terminals
# Variable electronic crossover at 40~200 Hz, 24 dB/octave Low pass
# Quasi-parametric EQ, ±12 dB/octave, 30~80 Hz
# Subsonic filter at 30 Hz, 12 dB/octave, defeatable
# Input (RCA connection): Low-level, hi-level w/Smart Engage
# Input sensitivity: 100mV-1V/1V-10V switchable
# CEA-2006 Compliant
what do you guys think, is it a pretty decent set up?

the problem is that you should of got a 2 ohm version or a dvc version. Mtx does not have a amp that will push 700 watts into a 4 ohm load. You need to plan out a system before you buy
well for 1 they didnt have the combo in a 2 ohm thats why i didnt get a 2 ohm.and if i feel that its not hittin hard enough ill swap out the sub with a 2 ohm, the box is a kicker box and i cant find what the internal volume of the box is.

Its not the hitting hard enough that we are concered with. It the damage to the speaker from underpowering it. 350 watts is kinda of a big deal. Thats more then half of the rms. At this point the box size does not even matter. Your going to end up clipping that amp and in turn destroy the sub. Who ever sold you that and called it a package should be bared from selling things

i bought the sub and box together and the amp separate. and how could lower wattage damage the sub, wouldn't to much be worse than to little?i bought that amp because it was the best amp i could afford being as it was MTX.

I am not saying you messed up. You got two nice items. The problem is that your going to have to crank up the gains up to get the speaker to play. Your at half the rms of the speaker on power. Which means that your going to have to crank up the gains to get the sub to play right. Which in turn is going to over drive the amp into clipping. Even if you get a 2 ohm your still underpowered. Not as bad and will sound a lot better. But still underpowered. I would look at the mtx 7500 or 8500. I think mtx will preform better. imo. The bass is more solid and there. The kicker loud and heard. But this was with car and stuff. owell. I sell kick too but prefer mtx. So there is no biases towards each. Here i some propaganda

i agree, i believe it is a solid set up, id be shocked if it turns out to be otherwise. i should receive all the stuff either friday or next monday so ill let u guys no as soon as its installed.
i agree with wrx and b18c.. your setup is going to be way underpowered and in turn.. you are not going to be satisfied with the output of your subwoofer until you start cranking up your gains.. even at 2ohm your amplifier still puts out 150rms watts less than your subwoofer can handle.. 150 watts is not nearly as big a deal as 350rms watts underpowered..
so, as previously stated.. correctly.. you should have looked into what you were buying before you bought.. because you would have been much happier with a sub rated at 750rms that is being fed with 750rms watts.. not to mention it would be easier on the amp.. watch your gains for now but i suggest you look into the 2ohm version of your sub or a stronger amp.

Although you are right that "under-powering" a sub will not hurt it, the problem is, as stated driving that under-powered amp into clipping, and you will, the Kicker L7 is a power hungry sub, it works best when powered properly and as also mentioned you are way underpowered.
You would be much better off being over-powered, the MTX TA92001 would be a much better amp for the Kicker S12L7.

BTW Kicker does not warranty burnt VCs, something to keep in mind when deciding what you can afford.

you want performance from your sub? i assume.. yes?
then go ahead and get yourself an amplifier capable of 750wrms like everyone has been telling you. if you dont want to spend 1k on an amp.. than maybe you should start looking at less powerful subs and less powerful amps.
generally.. any good amp will average $1/rms watt.
on the other hand.. there ARE 750rms capable amplifiers that can be had for cheaper than 1k.. do some researching for yourself and show us what you come up with

alright well i installed the system this morning, and so far its sounds awesome but i haven't even turned it up into the positive bass because im breaking in the sub.
OP why buy a sub like an L7 when your going to underpower it??? Find a DVC or 2ohm L7 or get a more powerful amp

No, he will have it wired to 4 ohms so 1000wrms at 1 ohm is still most likely going to under power it.
