dropping transmission w/ jack stands...
so im gonna replace my clutch against my best judgements in my 5th gen but im determined and content on learning... and also short on money
basically i know how/can find out how and i intend to have a solid knowledge before i perform surgery on the beast
but with smaller engines like B/D series i know my friends just prop theirs up on jack stands, hoist the *** end of the engine up, unbolt the transmission and replace the clutch that way. is that possible with the larger H series H22?
or will i have to take the whole soB out and do it that way
also, any great tips would be greatly obliged

there is no other way, the tranny has to come out...
i did it by myself the first time, basically get it ready (getting everything disconnected/out of the way). unbolt tranny, wiggle it free to the point where its ready to come down, and let it land softly on my chest
putting back in was even worse
but i learned, and as long as there is someone to help you guide it, as well as a jack with tranny adapter and a ratcheting strap to fasten the tranny to the jack, not too hard at all.

Preludes and accords usually take more time, they dont have shift linkages they have shifter cables, bigger heavier trans, less room.
Just work your way from top to bottom or however you choose. Just dont forget to drop the crossmember. Drain the tranny fluid so you dont spill it all over yourself when you take it down. And just take your time, watch what your doing. take everything apart. Its pretty simple. Just a little time consuming.

my very first time, alone, had a regular jack but no tranny adapter, it took me ~8 hours. the worst was getting it back in and aligned on the input shaft, i can only bench press the tranny so many times
but, with a helper to guide, a jack with tranny adapter, and a strap to fasten the tranny and lift straight up, the second time it took a little under 4 hours. i'm sure next time will be less.

sadly... imagine someone who loves their car but has never done any work under the hood of a car but has a good understanding of tech manuals and tools?
what about then?
(thats me)

well, that was me, where the only knowledge i had was in a book, and watchin dad of course
but i quickly graduated to swapping my motor (ALONE, except for guiding it back in to the mounts), swapping heads, swapping tranny, changing out clutch, brake lines, etc etc. if you have a honda FSM you will have no problems. but a helping hand goes a long way...

its not too bad....just be inventive and figure out ways to make things easier....driveway mechanic ingenuity i like to call it
lifting the tranny while aligning it is the hardest part...just get a piece of exhaust tubing long enough to span the fenders and set it over the tranny, then wrap a ratchet strap around the tranny and tube..then its just crank wiggle crank wiggle crank wiggle until its in..

I would say getting it back on is the toughest part. Just watch out for those dowel pins, don't lose or crush them.
Otherwise, label and bag every nut and bolt and where it goes! You'll thank me when you're putting it back together and find out that you're missing a few bolts or nuts.

Everything mentioned above is correct.
1. time consuming
2. transmission is f#$king heavy
3. label everything in zip-lock bags
You can do it.

im surprised everyone is saying the tranny is heavy. i was actually suprised how easy it was to manage. its light enough to lift with one hand from above. ive replace a slush box on a lude before... now that was heavy!
if this is your first time.... take Finest's advice... label everything u take off. it helps alot.

lifting AND manipulating at the same time tire you out real fast. i can lift it with one hand too
but twist/turn/shimmy/manipulate/jiggle it with one hand? not happening

x10. remove that rod, not sure what it's called tho

Remove the front crossmember completely. It takes all of 20 minutes to do it, but it gives you a ton more room to work with. Note that it removes the front engine mount, so you need to support the engine with something. I have used a jack to support the engine before, but I now use an engine support that spans the fenders.
listen to 117. he knows exactly what hes talking about. you've got about a half inch of clearance if you are trying to drop the tranny straight out. its a bitch. now i dont know how you are going to support the engine when you remove the front mount, but its definitely a better idea.
