yes get a new one and put it back on, you probably are fine without it since the tensioner is already tight, but is that a chance you really wanna take?

I would suppose as long as its tq'd, you would be fine
I would replace it at the next belt change though
You wouldnt want to just press the tentioner up, and have it too tight/loose

Once the belt has been tensioned and the tensioner is tight, you no longer need the spring (and in fact, the belt can be tensioned without it). The only possible help it might provide is a slight added measure of protection against disaster if your tensioner bolt somehow loosens up, but that help would be extremely minimal at best. Either way, the spring is inexpensive, so I'd just replace it as soon as you can.

I've never attempted to access the spring with the cover on, but as you've stated, it certainly isn't going to be easy. Your best bet may be a pair of extended needle-nose pliers.
