Default retard timing?

I retard my timing the other day and my car is not strong anymore, but in the freeway the car eats less gas. One of my friend told me to retard it so it will be faster, but to me it's way slower. Is my friend right or wrong?

You only should pull/advance timing when youre also adding or taking away fuel... Its called tuning.

Dont mess with it just for the fun of it, if you don;t know exactly what youre doing, its gonna mess stuff up.
