Default Can you have too much oil pressure?

I tested mine, it gets up to about 90 psi when you rev to like 5k. The book says it should be like 50 at 3k, and Im starting to think this is why I burn so much oil. If there is too much pressure, then it will push its way past the rings, and through the valve guides much easier. Is this possible? I know theres a spring loaded bypass in the pump and I hope its not clogged.

if the oil presure is too high, it will blow seals. This is usuially caused by over filling the engine most of the time, but sometimes there are clogged oil passage ways and such. How did you test the oil pressure? 90 Psi sounds high, but maybe its not too high for 5K rpm.

Yes its possible that the high oil pressure will cause your motor to burn oil, im not sure what the pressure its supposed to be at 5k rpms but i know if you overfill your oil you will burn it

It's probably like 80 at 3k I believe, and its this pressure at like half a quart low.

Oil pressure has a lot to with the temp also. My H23 will sit at 80-90 psi at idle when I first start it up, but at operating temp it may sit around 20-30 psi at idle. Maybe read more about the details of checking oil pressure on your book...

I'm not saying your wrong, but how does temperature affect oil pressure?

90 DX, but I find it hard that the psi should drop like 40 psi just because its thinner. Does anyone agree with me that the bypass/ or any other oil passages can be gummed up causing too much oil pressure. I would really believe that this pressure is too high and is the reason I'm burning like 2 quarts per 1500-2000 miles.

Cooler oil is thicker like Evil Monkey said. Also when the block/head are cooler, the already small oil passages and clearances in the engine are tighter and smaller flow path = higher pressure.

I just had a temporary setup to check my oil pressure, so maybe Ill actually setup a real oil pressure gauge and watch it while Im driving and when its up to temp and whatnot. I searched on here to check how you guys usually set them up. I saw that most of you ran a T off the block where the sender is, and then you can hook the sender up and the feed for the gauge.

Or is there a better way?
