93 Accord Brake Discs
How do you remove the front brake discs to replace? A Honda dealership tells me it's a complicated process, but my Haines manual says all that is required is to remove two phillips retaining screws plus the caliper mounting bracket. Which is correct?
you have the wrong haynes.
Tools:
Wheel lug socket (19mm OEM)
17mm wrench/socket
10mm 12 point socket
14mm socket
36mm socket
Long breaker bar
hammer
Torque wrench (must go up to 181 Ft-Lbs)
Jack
Stands
Brake Cleaner
Syl-Glyde or caliper slider lubricant
Anti-Sieze compound (copper)
Steps:
1) Lift the front of the vehicle and securely rest it on jack stands.
2) Remove both front wheels.
3) Remove the 2 14mm bolts that hold the caliper to the bracket, and set the caliper aside. NOTE* Its best to secure the caliper with a hook or wire so that it doesn't rest with all its weight on the brake line
4) Remove the 2 17mm bolts that hold the caliper bracket to the steering knuckle and set it aside.
5) Using the 36mm socket, remove the axel nut and slide the axel back.
6)Remove the 4 10mm 12 point bolts that hold the bearing/hub assembly to the knuckle, and remove the knuckle from the car.
7) Using the 14mm socket, remove the 4 14mm bolts that hold the rotor to the hub and whack the rotor off the hub with the hammer. NOTE* Sometimes the rotors are too seized to the hub, and they need to be pressed out, this can be done at most garages and machine shops
8 Install the new rotor onto the hub and torque the 4 bolts to 40 Ft-Lbs
9) Reinstall the hub/rotor assembly onto the knuckle, and torque the 4 bolts to 40 Ft-Lbs
10) Slide the axel back into the hub assembly, and torque the axel nut to 181 Ft-Lbs
11) Reinstall the caliper bracket, with the new pads in it, and torque the bolts to 80 Ft-Lbs
12 reinstall the caliper onto the caliper bracket and torque the bolts down to 50 Ft-Lbs NOTE* if you are reinstalling new brake pads, the caliper piston need to be pushed back into the housing to allow room for the new pads. This can be done with a big pair of channel locks
13) Reinstall the wheels, torque them to 80 Ft-Lbs, lower the vehicle back down. NOTE* If you pushed the piston back into the caliper, pump the brakes till the pedal firms up before driving away.
