Default My idiot brother and his friend...

My idiot brother and his friend were putting in some stereo stuff (IE speakers and subs) and for some unknown reason they took off the bars that go across the trunk from the arms to hold the trunk up and now they can't get them back on. I've looked at it and for some reason I can't seem to figure it out. Does anybody know how they work and how they can be put back on? This is on a '97 2 door Accord. Thanks guys

If they are like the 4th gens, then those are the springs. They are twisted and installed with a special tool.

I figured as much that they are the springs, but can they be installed without that tool? Or should he take it to a shop to get them fixed?

I'm trying to understand what bars/springs you are referring to, before I can possibly give some more info. There are two struts on both sides that hold the trunk lid up, are you referring to those?

Edit: Never mind, on the 97 they had the springs and a clip, instead of like my 95 EX with two struts. I'll see what I can find regarding the springs and clip.

Here is a Honda trunk spring tool the mechanics normally use:

But, I'm thinking a box end wrench or the open end of the wrench may work to push and hook the spring rods back in. (You could try using two wrenches at the same time to push and then hook the rod ends back in.)

To reinstall, it looks the two springs rods cross each other. Then afterward, the spring clip is attached in the middle where they cross. Reinstalling the first rod end of the spring should not require a tool, as there would be no tension on it yet. The rod end you install last would require a tool, such as maybe the wrench.

The manual does not give much info., other then to use the torsion spring tool to pull the rods out, and says reassembly is reverse of removal. I would try use a couple of wrenches first; maybe get another person to help.

This is just an option here, but if they removed them, then they should be abel to get them back on. I mean, I know those are a PITA to remove/install on any car, and I would personally be interested to know how they were removed without that tool, and without cutting them.

Well I don't know exactly how they got them off but they managed to, though they did have to bend and twist the hook on the drivers side. It looks like crap and I know I'll be spending a good bit of time trying to undue this crap they got themselves into.
