Default Help Tuning cams for track racing with my gearing!

Briefly hear is my setup:JDM b18c-R is putting down 196whp @ just over 8400rpm on a 1100 series mustang dyno. It has been ported, has Toda spec Bs and supertech valvetrain. OEM p73-00 81.25mm pistons, spoon header ported intake manifold and 64mm TB. I also have a civic type r gear box with ats 3-4-5th gears and a spoon 1.5way diff Toda Flywheel and Bully ST3 clutch....I only have a printed graph of my dyno results.

I have herd and read that "You want the peak torque at the start of each upshift and for this peak to continue on for 500-1000rpm after the upshift.

My peak torque is at 6000rpm and it slowly starts to fall at 6700rpm (Cams set 0,0 and head only milled 0.002")

Shifting at 8800 with my ATS gears:
2-3 7000
3-4 7100
4-5 7100

*By playing with cam gear timing, is there anyway for me tomove my peak torque up or to move my peak hp down to help lap times with my gearing

Thanks

it's not peak torque you should be aiming to optimize

you should look for maximum area under the torque curve

you might want to play around with the VTEC x-over point a bit - but again - you should aim for maximum area under the torque curve when doing this

otherwise i would get some driving books and learn how to drive better -- "Speed Secrets" is a great book.

that can save you x.x seconds per lap for free

Yes that is correct, when accelerating in a straight line that is the most effecient torque curve.

However when racing on a track you often need to use a higher gear through many corners. That means the revs will often drop pretty low when accelerating out of the corner.

So with your gearing and I'd say peak torque around 6000rpm would be good for a track car.

I'd focus on adjusting the cam gears for more torque from 6500-7500rpm, because that's the most likely rev range you will be at when accelerating out of corners. But do so without loosing the midrange you've alredy got. Whether that's possible or not depends on your setup and tuner.

In theory, how would I move the cam gears to attempt this! I'm in Ottawa and there is only 3 tuners. The one I use is very good but mostly does forced induction and doesn't play with cam gear very often...peopleare cheap and don't want to spend on the extra dyno time!

Thanks

Thanks for the heads up on the book. I understand the driver is the biggest part of the equasion for sure. I've just completed the best racing school in my area a few months back (Trac Racing) and now have my regional race license....trying to put the car together to compete in 2-3 events in the Candadian Castrol Touring Car Champ.

I'm by far a rookie when it comes to seting up my car wether it's Camber angles, Toe angle, playing with my DMS suspension to dial it in or optimizing my power ban..therfore I appreceat all advise or imput!

Thanks

with a honda, you really want to shift as high as possible.

soo.... post a dyno graph and worry about where the hp lies on the upshift rather than the torque - since your gearing will multiply the torque anyway.

look 3/4 of the way to the bottom:

And if you don't believe me, try driving your course timed shifting so you fall to peak tq on your graph. Then do another lap shifting at redline.
