Yea, that's just carbon. It just cakes up like that. You can clean it up a bit if you wish. ATF will eat the carbon away. Use it sparingly. Your car will smoke a little after doing this, but it will stop. Change your oil a few miles down the road if you decide to use ATF.

it just looks like a motor with a few miles on it and has alot of carbon build up from over the years. If it bothers you get some type r pistons and bore and hone that thing and make it brand new again. Give that motor some new life. Anyways looks normal. How many miles are on the motor

looks like a lot of carbon... like the engine ran a little rich or just has a lot of miles.... clean it up as best as possible... so you can see if theres any damage you should be worried about... if there isnt then just clean and reuse... check for warpage... new gaskets all around install and have fun.

carbon deposits = higher compression FTW!

This is actually my motor, I forgot my login so my buddy posted this up for me.
Thanks for the help/info . I figured it was some sort of build-up from when the motor was ran. Im going to be using the block for a simple ls/v build. I was going to pick up a b16a2 oil and water pump when i read its recomended to use either a gsr or itr oil and water pump. but my understanding was that b series vtec oil and water pumps were functionally the same. So my question is would i be fine to run the b16 oil and water pumps?
thanks

yes you can run a b16 oil and water pump. 96+ all b-series are the same as the itr PUMP. there is a difference between the vtec and non-vtec water pumps.

the vtec pumps have 22t(correct if im wrong) and the non-vtec have 19t(same correction). the vtec pumps have more teeth to prevent water arriation(bubbles in coolant) at high rpms.

BTW my pistons flaked like that when i overreved and my valves hit the pistons.
