Default Can't hear vtec, opinion/advice needed

Ok, i just got done swapping a gsr motor into my eg setup is as follows:

99 gsr long block
92-95 jdm b16 sirII trans
stock p72 ecu
apexi world sport exhaust with oem cat

After driving the car a bit i am not sure vtec is engaging. in all the other vtec cars i have owned and ridden in vtec makes a distinguishable noise when it engages. the only other gsr i have ridden in was my swapped crx but that had a skunk2 intake mani. i was wondering if the butterflies in the stock gsr manifold make it harder to hear vtec. and also, is there any ways that vtec is not working even though i have no cels?

thanks in advance

No, you would definitely hear it out the exhaust as well, it will be very distinct.

Are you throwing any codes? I would start by checking wires if you don't have any codes.

I was wondering the same thing about the manifold cause when i'm on stock exhaust i cant hear it crosover until the iab open up. but normaly with my muffler off i can hear it. check the soloniod wire. also it has to be at driving temp.

its deff up to temp, the only issue i have is that the idle is alittle high and it surges slighty. like it idles at 1500rpms and surges sometimes down to 1000rpms then back up but its not crazy surging like when the iacv is fugged up.

tach works fine, speedo works fine. oil is a tad low due to a leaking vc gasket.

oil level is ok..

i popped the vtec solenoid plug off and did a pull and it deff didn't want to pull the same way. i popped it back on cleared the code and did another pull, this time it pulled hard. i still can't hear that distinct sound though..

maybe it has something to do with the ecu itself?

one thing i would try doing is try and ziptie the butterfly valves open and do a quick run, because i'm sure you know of the "primary/secondary" vtec engagements.
