Default 98 GSR with 167k oil question???

i have a 98 gsr with 167k and ishe still runs better than ever, but im wondering witch oil do you guys think i should use. Im just using a regualer 10w30 oil at the moment and next oil change i think im going to go back to 5w30. Anyways would it be bad if i switched to a synthetic oil now? I was going to use Royal Purple but i wasent sure if it was okay or not. And what to you guys suggest i use?

I think there was a thread like this just made today... Anyhow I'd stick with 10-30 (depends on your area/climate) Castrol Hige mileage. I use RP and RL on my 94 Gs-R but I been running Castrol HM on my 98 with 160+ miles.

everyone says its so bad to go from synthetic to regular, and they say once you go synthetic you cant go back.

BUT my grandpa has been a mechanic for 60yrs. and he says it doesnt matter to switch back and forth.

Now If your car burns a lot of oil (more than a quart every 3k) i wouldnt use a syn. oil because its thinner and i think you would use more.

My gsr uses about 3/4 every 4k (thanks to "gunk" engine cleaner). I use 10w 30 during the summer since its hotter and thicker. And 5w 30 during the winter.

When my car burned a lot of oil (1 quart every 1k) i used Mobil Regular Oil. But since my car doesnt use NEAR as much and i KNOW it uses about 3/4 a quart every 4k, i use Mobil Fully synthetic.

I choose Mobil as my oil because Mobil's oil has the least varnish in it out of most oil plus its a know brand and a quality oil. And varnish causes your cars valves to get sticky and your seals to get hard and eventually crack.

Hope this helps! This is just what i know. It may not to be totally right, but i believe a mechanic that has 60yrs under his belt.

When I first got my car, I used conventional oil for 3 years. I burned a quart of oil every 3k miles. This was with the Valvoline high mileage oil and Havoline. I switched to Castrol Syntec 9k miles ago and I'm still burning just a quart of oil every 3k miles. Same driving style.

This is my experience. Your mileage will vary.
