Default quick timing belt question

i just want to know if a timing belt is off by a tooth or so, will the cam gears be able to line up at all? in other words how do you know if the timing belt jumped a tooth, besides the bad idle and crappy driving, just visually. thanks

get it to tdc, then look at the cam gears and see if the arrows are up. if they are not then it's off
