Default Synchro's f'ed up?

So lately my car has been wanting to pop out of 5th gear at random times. I haven't been driving anywhere farther than 20 or 30 mins lately so many times i will make it without it happening, usually takes awhile or happen but after it happens the first time it does it more often, anywhere from like 10 seconds later to a couple of mins later. Do i have to pull the tranny and replace the synchronizers or could it be bigger than that. Any suggestions?

It's an easy fix. Replace the 5th-reverse synchro set and 5th gear on the mainshaft. The gear is probably about $60 and the synchro set is $125 to $130.

I didn't figure the parts would be too expensive, but paying someone to drop the tranny is where all the freakin money goes...so you think the gear needs to be replaced as well as the synchronizers...?

how do you guys know it is the synchros?

Usually when a clutch is going bad the shifter "pops" out of high gears...how new (or old) is your clutch?

Try to take off starting in 4th gear and see what happens. If the car stalls, then your clutch is good--if the motor just revs and does not stall--then it is your clutch.

Good luck

Its not the dropping of the transmission i mean the labor someone charges when dropping it is involved...my buddy can get the transmission out no problem but me or him have never rebuilt a tranny so there is no point in me trying to drop it. And i'm pretty sure the clutch is rather new...not sure though i just bought it this past year but i'll try that. Appreciate that

that tranny must be stolen for that price, since they normally sell for 3x more.
