will the stock keep up with a 1987 5.0 and if so what will i have to do to it to bet the mustang

i too watched that episode of pinks and i was amazed that a civic with 600 hp could be that damn slow. It really made me doubt imports for a second, but i yeah i guess that kid just didnt know what he was doing and that domestic (i believe it was a trans am) was freakin sick.
