Default 5th gear

Today when i was paging through my manual about how to lift an engine and trans assembly out of the car, the manual transaxle page caught my eye. It looks like 5th gear could be swapped with relative ease (or possibly im looking at the final gear ratio?). Whichever gear is outside of the main transmission casing. I've heard of people switching around gears in their transmissions so i was wondering, what are all the parts neccessary to switch from an SI to HF 5th gear? Also, where could you buy something like that (other than obviously taking it out of an HF transmission)?

thanks

You can buy a new 5th gear from any Honda dealership, and as an added perk, the pair are the cheapest gears. To my knowledge all you need is the countershaft and mainshaft 5th gears, but synchos may also be needed.

what year car you have?

I'll bet $5 you were looking at a Haynes or Chiltons manual and they were talking about the 84-87 Civic or 86-89 Teg tranny.

Not gonna happen on a 88-2000 tranny.

hmm, i thought you could just swap them also.. i have a trans i am building in my apartment where i did just that, swapped the countershaft si gear with an hf gear. I was kinda wondering myself whether the hf gear would cause issues. the mainshaft 5th and countershaft 5th gears seemed to mesh well, and i seem to remember reading that it is fairly common when you are swapping final drives to go to the hf gear to keep revs down, so i did it.

However, if mista bone says it doesnt work, i believe him. i just want details on whether it is even possible, because in my case, the money is spent on the hf gear. if it doesnt work at all, ill tear apart the transmission again and swap back to the si, so i can enjoy my 4800 rpm cruise at 80mph.

GearSETS.........

you stating you swapped just just the CS side gear means the mess was way off. If you didn't use the MS part of the gearset.......grindage IF the tranny will even spin over.

Wanna split a tranny down, remove both shafts, we can change 5th gear.

alright, well assuming i get the entire set for the hf 5th main shaft, syncro sleeve and all, is that going to work if i just swap it in? i forgot to mention the details of my setup.. its an 88 si cable trans with 4.9 FD.

I'm just looking to see if there is more to it, my interpretation is that i can swap the gearsets and everything works. if im missing something.. let me know..

This is correct. There is no separate cover for the fifth gear end on the 88-91 trannies. you will have to remove the entire thing and crack the case open to get at fifth gear.

Sounds old skoolish....with seperate 5th gears...the kind that are always toast because of lack of lubrication...glad Honda no longer does that!
