Default Loud Engine Knock @ 3k

So, all of the sudden, I've developed this bizarre engine knock/ticking noise when slowly approaching 3k rpms. The funny thing about this noise is that it goes away if you try to hold the rpm where you first hear it. But, as soon as you increase the rpms even more, it comes back. As long as you are advancing the throttle, the noise is persistent. The actual sound itself sounds different than a valve, however. Louder, and a dull 'tinking' noise almost. Imagine if you layed a screwdriver head on top one of the pistons at a shallow angle and loosely held the handle allowing it to bounce up and down as the piston traveled through the cylinder.

Please, Please, Please tell me this is NOT a piston issue. Oh God.

has the engine been run out of oil?

typical rod bearing knock will be heard stepping on/letting off the gas. Doesn't have to be at high RPM.
Too much slack in the T-belt can also make some noises as well.

It ran out of oil before in the past right after I first got it, but never had anything like this come up until now. I just checked it the other day and it was full.

The T-belt was replaced about 15k miles ago, so I don't think that's it, but I will check that tonight for sure.

Are there any tests to actually pinpoint a rod bearing and label that as being the problem that I could perform from home, or is this something that needs to be done with special equipment? Would I get a knock sensor code if this were the case?

I would take it to a repair shop. You can also try using a stethoscope to find where the noise is coming from.
