vtec kick in late
i got a b16a motor in my EM1.
i have notice that the vtec is kicking in late.
First gear kicks in where its soppose to,
but in 2nd,3rd gear it kicks in at 6,500..
never tried kickin the vtec in in 4th and 5th...
what could be the cause of that?
thanks

VTEC is engaged by the ECU. Unless you buy a mini-me swapped civic with VTEC wired to a button on your dash, but we won't get into that. Anyway, several factors help the ECU make the decision of when should VTEC engage. Normally it is engaged at 5500~ RPMs.
Off the top of my head- oil pressure, engine load, and traveling speed are three of those factors. I don't feel like searching for ya this time.

Unless I'm mistaken vtec kicks in at slightly differen't rpms in each gear because the load on the engine is different. Thus making the oil pressure slightly different.
If it's usually around ~6,500 then you're fine.

Do you have an oil pressure guage? Vtec should come on at the same rpm every time.
The factors are RPM, Throttle Positio.n, Vehicle Speed, Load, and Oil Pressure. If all these things are in order Vtec will come on, if one thing isa out of wack it won't. But will always come on at the same RPM
