Ok, so I have the tranny out to change out the bearings. I figured I might as well put in a new clutch while the tranny is out. I read the helms and it seems pretty straightforward. In the helms manual, it list a tool to lock the flywheel so you can remove the pressure plate. It's called the ring gear holder (07LAB-PV00100 or 07924-PD20003). Is this tool necessary? Is there another way to work around this?

you do not need to lock the flywheel when changing the clutch. if you have air tools, the pressure plate will go on/off stupid easy. then, when torquing the pressure plate bolts, it may move a loittle, but nothing serious.

the only time you <U>may</U> need the flywheel tool is when changing the flywheel. personally, i use a piece of chain from one of the pressure plate bolt holes connected to one of the tranny bolt holes. i have done this for 15 years with no side effects.

I have mine turned whenever I change the clutch. There is no chance of me wanting to rip it all back out because I was too cheap/lazy to go spend 20 minutes and 25 bucks at the machine shop.

 

So what will likely happen if I don't? Yes, I don't want to go back in, if at all possible. I never resurface flywheels on my other cars. I guess I've been lucky.

Well, to make you feel better, Honda just issued a service bulletin to us Tech's stating that we should NEVER resurface a flywheel. We are supposed to use it as is, or replace it.

 

Now that is a pleasant surprise!!
I'm sure people have had issues with not resurfacing their flywheel, but I haven't had issues (knock on wood). Perhaps I'll take a chance on my vx.

That is a parts department sale technique, you can safely resurface a flywheel. I'd like that TSB number and what vehicles it affects, because I haven't been able to find a TSB like that in Alldata or Mitchell OnDemand yet....

 

I've always resurfaced my flywheel and it's always worked great.

As for that tool, the other guy is right, as long as you have air tools it'll be fine. Justmake sure you torque it right and spend those extra few minutes making surethings are done right, otherwise you'll regrete it a whole lot.
